Manchester United’s new signing Mason Mount didn’t exactly have a dream debut at the Theatre of Dreams. Mount joined United this summer for $76 million from Chelsea with a lot of expectations but his Premier League debut for Manchester United at Old Trafford has been nothing less than shambolic.
Manchester United faced Wolves in their opening fixture of the 2023-24 Premier League season. The club crawled to a 1-0 victory courtesy of French defender Raphael Varane’s 76th-minute goal. While it was an overall lackluster performance from the Manchester United team, Mason Mount’s performance was poor in particular.

Mount had minimal impact on the pitch as he managed just 30 touches before getting replaced by Christen Eriksen in the 68th minute. After the match, talkSPORT published Mason Mount’s stats from the game, which has raised quite a few eyebrows. As stated by the British news outlet, not only Mount failed to score a goal or register an assist but he also failed to create any chances, win any tackles or aerial duels, and provide any crosses.
While this piece of news shocked everyone, Manchester United coach Erik ten Hag isn’t too worried about his midfielder’s performance. Speaking after the match, Ten Hag reflected on Mount’s performance and said, “Good performance. He did what we expected him to do.” The Dutch coach further stated Mount maintained a good level and did his job in what was a moderate match for his side.
