Bayer Leverkusen are enjoying the time of their lives. The German club created history by lifting their first-ever Bundesliga title by beating Werder Bremen on April 14.
The architect behind Leverkusen’s enormous was their coach Xabi Alonso who transformed the club from a relegation battler to Champions of Germany in just 18 years. The Spaniard’s success with the German club might have also alerted some European giants, who would want to fight it out for Xabi’s signature.

One of the interested clubs is Real Madrid, a club with which Xabi Alonso shares a special connection. The 42-year-old played for ‘Los Blancos’ for 5 years where he won a Champions League and a La Liga title.
The Spanish club’s interest in Xabi Alonso looks so concrete that even the Bayer Leverkusen board has mentioned Xabi’s possible move to Real Madrid. The club CEO, Fernando Carro has even gone on to say that Xabi Alonso will definitely manage Real Madrid one day. He said, “I always say that history owes Leverkusen a league title and Atlético Madrid a Champions League.”
Although the Spanish soccer executive is not sure about the year when Xabi Alonso decides to join ‘Los Blancos’. but his instincts reportedly tell Carro that it would happen very soon. It would be very interesting to see how Real Madrid’s players complement the playing style of the Spaniard.
Bayer Leverkusen CEO believes that the club deserves to win the Bundesliga
Fernando Carro joined Bayer Leverkusen in the year 2018. The German club has always been a very decent one, playing regularly in the Europa and the Champions League. However, the club hadn’t won the league ever, coming very close in the 2001/02 season, when they finished runners-up.
The club was leading the Bundesliga title race with Borussia Dortmund and looked pretty comfortable to win the German league. However, Leverkusen had a catastrophic slip-up during the final phase of the Bundesliga, which means Borussia Dortmund emerged as the Champions of Germany in the 2001/02 season.
Bayer Leverkusen’s ordeal was one of the cruelest end to a season. Many believed that out of all teams in Germany, it was Bayer Leverkusen who deserved to win a Bundesliga title. And this is how Fernando Carro feels about the club.

The club CEO said after Leverkusen secured its first-ever Bundesliga in 2024, “I always say that history owes Leverkusen a league title and Atlético Madrid a Champions League.” The club looked pretty ecstatic to see his team become German champions after years of heartbreak. He also believes that Atletico Madrid, who have cruelly lost three finals deserves to win at least one Champions League.
Liverpool and FC Bayern Munich won’t get their hands on Xabi Alonso soon
Although the Spaniard believes that Xabi Alonso will become a Real Madrid soon, Xabi Alonso thinks otherwise. The former Liverpool player is completely focused on his project at Leverkusen. The 42-year-old could have left Leverkusen at the end of the 23/24 season, as many elite clubs were interested in him. Two significant names in this regard are Liverpool and FC Bayern Munich.
The clubs are without any managers next season, as Jurgen Klopp has announced his farewell and Thomas Tuchel too will leave Bayern at the end of the 23/24 season. The club had an incredible squad and infrastructure to persuade Xabi Alonso.

However, Xabi Alonso held a discussion with the Bayer Leverkusen board at the end of which the Spaniard decided to stay at the club for one more season. Xabi Alonso will be a Bayer Leverkusen coach for at least until 2025 when his release clause will be activated.
The release clause is said to have been higher than $10 million. Both Liverpool and FC Bayern Munich would want to convince Xabi Alonso to join their clubs in 2025. However, the two clubs will face tough competition from Real Madrid, who look like the favorites according to the Bayer Leverkusen CEO. Therefore, it would be interesting to see how Xabi Alonso’s future unfolds.
