It appears as if Netflix has brutally ended the Cristiano Ronaldo versus Lionel Messi debate. The Messi-Ronaldo debate is one of the most controversial and never-ending debates in soccer history. While some side with the Portuguese ace, others prefer the Argentine counterpart. However, Netflix has portrayed its stance in a rather cryptic manner.
Netflix released its latest docuseries, ‘Captains of the World’, in December 2023, capturing exclusive behind-the-scenes footage from the 2022 World Cup earlier today. In the docuseries, several players like Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Harry Kane, Neymar Jr., and so on gave their views of what the World Cup means to them. The series has also managed to get a hold of what went on inside the national team camps during the tournament last year.
In the first episode of the series, however, Netflix gave a rather cryptic message about the Messi versus Ronaldo debate. The scene contained footage from Portugal’s first group stage match of the 2022 World Cup against Ghana. In the scene, Ronaldo looked frustrated after Portugal‘s dismal first-half performance in the match that they ultimately won 3-2.

Ronaldo, who scored his first and only goal in last year’s World Cup against Ghana from the penalty spot, was celebrating his goal in the scene. However, in the backdrop of the scene, when Ronaldo was celebrating his goal, a tifo of Messi appeared. Simultaneously, a Portuguese commentator said the phrase, “The father of Portugal.” While it might not have been Netflix‘s intention, it managed to end the GOAT debate brutally.
Cristiano Ronaldo believes that his rivalry with Lionel Messi is over
Meanwhile, Cristiano Ronaldo has stated that his long-time rivalry with Lionel Messi has come to an end. Over the last two decades, Ronaldo and Messi have continued to dominate the soccer world. Even in 2023, Messi managed to win his record-extending eighth Ballon d’Or. On the other hand, Ronaldo is set to finish the year as the top scorer.
Ronaldo, however, stated earlier in 2023 that the rivalry has now come to its inevitable end. Ahead of Portugal’s Euro 2024 qualifiers earlier this year, Ronaldo said, “We’ve both changed the history of football and are respected. The rivalry between us is over.” However, even with both Ronaldo and Messi in the twilight of their careers, the two soccer GOATS continue to etch their names in soccer history.
