Erling Haaland currently has 32 goals registered to his name with eight games still left to play. The question here is ‘when’ than that of ‘will’ Erling Haaland break the EPL scoring record. Erling Haaland scored twice in the match against Leicester City to level the record held by Mohammed Salah.
Liverpool’s Mohammed Salah previously held the record for scoring the most goals in a Premier League season. He scored 32 goals in thirty-eight games. This record was previously jointly held by Cristiano Ronaldo, Alan Shearer, and Luis Suárez. They all had 31 goals registered to their names.
The player already has 47 goals for Manchester City in all competitions since joining them from Borussia Dortmund. The player is currently Manchester City’s all-time top-scorer in a single season.
Manchester City teammates show their confidence in Erling Haaland to break EPL record
Haaland’s Manchester City teammates have no doubts about him being able to break the goal-scoring record. They all seem very excited to see the player break the goal-scoring record.
His Manchester City teammates shared their thoughts in an interview with Diario As. Phil Foden commented, “He’s so driven to score. I think you can see that – he’s always making runs in the box, always wants to be there for the finish and I see the determination from him.”
Manchester City midfielder Rodri seemed to echo the same sentiments while commenting, “If he keeps in the same shape, in the same run, he can do it.”
Kevin De Bruyne holds no doubt that Erling Haaland can break the goal-scoring record in no time. The midfielder shared, “He definitely can. Why? Because he just scores goals and it’s his strong point, obviously,” He further went on, “Will he do it? Probably, if we create enough chances for him, then he will probably do it.”
It only took the player 28 appearances to meet Mo Salah’s previous record. Therefore, it is only a matter of time before he breaks the Premier League record.
How long before Haaland breaks Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo’s goal-scoring records?
Erling Haaland is comfortably ahead of both Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi at the same career juncture. Haaland has 201 goals in 244 for both club and country at the age of 23. Meanwhile, Lionel Messi had 140 goals in 262 games at a similar age, while Ronaldo had 102 in 303 appearances.
However, it should be kept in mind that both Messi and Ronaldo were not the central strikers of their teams at an early age. Ronaldo was used more as a winger by Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United, whereas, Messi played as a false 9 at Pep Guardiola‘s Barcelona.
Even with his neck-breaking pace, Haaland will find it difficult to break Lionel Messi’s record of scoring 91 goals in a calendar year. Meanwhile, his chances of outperforming Cristiano Ronaldo on an international front will be hampered by Norway’s failure to qualify at big stages.
However, it won’t be unrealistic to expect him to break the records set by Messi and Ronaldo. If the player continues to play for a dominating side like Manchester City, he can achieve the target within a few years.
