Recent reports suggest that Mason Greenwood, the controversial English forward, may be on the cusp of reigniting his career with a potential transfer to Serie A. Earlier last month, the 21-year-old announced that he would not be a part of Manchester United after his domestic abuse scandal finally drew to a close.
According to Gianluca Di Marzio, Greenwood’s services have been presented to Lazio, who have been in contact with Manchester United to orchestrate the deal. The success of this transfer is contingent upon the approval of Lazio’s current manager, Maurizio Sarri.
Lazio, boasting two Serie A titles, is determined to narrow the gap on the Italian champions, Napoli, after finishing behind them by a substantial 16-point margin in last season’s Serie A standings.

Greenwood is open to the prospect of moving to Italy in a bid to rejuvenate his career. Throughout the summer, Greenwood has been diligently working independently to regain fitness in anticipation of a potential return to competitive soccer. Manchester United recently announced that they will be parting ways with the forward following his suspension due to a domestic controversy involving his partner, Harriet Robson in January 2022.
Greenwood has also received offers from two Turkish clubs, with Besiktas being one of the reported suitors. Should the Serie A move not materialize, Turkish clubs have until September 15 to secure his services. There were some offers from Saudi Arabia also, but the deal couldn’t materialize.
Manchester United appear willing to facilitate Greenwood’s revival by arranging a loan deal with a potential purchase clause that could be activated at a later stage. Greenwood’s current contract with the club extends until 2025, implying that, if a transfer doesn’t come to fruition, Manchester United would need to settle the remaining two years unless an alternative agreement can be reached.
AS Roma pulled out of the race to sign Mason Greenwood due to high wages
Earlier reports indicated that Mason Greenwood attracted attention not only from Lazio but also from José Mourinho’s AS Roma. In an effort to extend his support, Mourinho took a direct approach and got in touch with Greenwood’s father.
According to The Sun, a source revealed, “Jose rang Mason’s dad and also spoke with Mason. He told him the best way out of his current situation was to start playing football — and that eventually all the hassle will fade away. Mason was pleased that he got in touch and it has lifted his spirits. He wants to get back playing and is just waiting for United to tell him what the future holds.”

However, AS Roma was unable to secure Greenwood’s services, primarily due to his wage demands. Greenwood’s current earnings stand at approximately $95,000 per week, and he is seeking a similar salary range with his next club, a financial commitment that AS Roma found unsustainable given his player profile.
Mourinho shares a significant bond with Greenwood, a connection dating back to his tenure as Manchester United’s manager. In 2018, at the tender age of 16, Greenwood was selected by Mourinho to join the team’s pre-season tour in the United States. Former United player Nicky Butt has disclosed that Mourinho recognized Greenwood’s potential as a future star for the first team when he was just 15 years old.
