Mason Greenwood’s last Manchester United appearance came in January 2022, just before his partner accused him of abuse. The 22-year-old was not affiliated with United until February 2023, when the matter was dismissed. He was thereafter the subject of an internal club inquiry, and he played no more part in the 2022–2023 season.
In addition, the Red Devils decided to make Greenwood available on loan rather than returning him for the upcoming campaign. After being selected, he played for La Liga team Getafe, where he made 25 appearances across various tournaments scored seven goals, and provided five assists.
