David Beckham has finally opened up after Lionel Messi helped Inter Miami win their first title. Messi, who has been incredible for Inter Miami since his debut, helped the club win the Leagues Cup. The Argentine star also won the top scorer and best player awards in the tournament. However, several soccer fans raised questions about the credibility of Messi’s and Inter Miami’s victory.
Ever since Lionel Messi scored a last-minute free-kick goal against Cruz Azul on his debut, fans have claimed that Inter Miami’s victory has been scripted. This accusation has followed the Herons in their following games in the Leagues Cup. Moreover, some controversial refereeing decisions that went in Inter Miami’s favor further intensified the fans’ doubts.
David Beckham, however, has finally spoken up about Inter Miami’s “scripted” Leagues Cup victory. Upon being asked whether his club’s Leagues Cup run looked like a movie, he said, “It does(laughs). People keep saying that. You know, every time Leo scores one of these goals, every time Busi (Busquets) makes one of these passes, every time Jordi (Alba) makes one of these runs, people say, is it scripted?“
Q : The league cup run looked like a movie, no?”

The Inter Miami co-owner further said, “It’s the biggest compliment anyone can give these players because it is like a movie.” The former Manchester United star also praised his players’ mannerisms and off-the-pitch behavior. However, Beckham has little time to revel in glory as Inter Miami sets its sights on a second trophy. Lionel Messi’s side will play FC Cincinnati, who are currently leading the MLS table, in the US Open Cup semifinal on August 23.
The Inter Miami coach revealed his worst fear before winning the Leagues Cup
Although Lionel Messi deserves full praise for helping Inter Miami achieve its maiden success, coach Gerardo Martino‘s role has gone somewhat unnoticed. Inter Miami signed former FC Barcelona coach Gerardo Martino just days after Messi’s signing. Martino has played a significant role in Inter Miami‘s dreamy Leagues Cup victory.

Martino, however, was having nightmares moments before his side clinched the Leagues Cup title on penalties. Seconds before the referee blew the whistle in the Leagues Cup final, Miami’s Leonardo Campana had a golden opportunity to seal his side’s victory against Nashville. However, Campana squandered the chance, as his shot hit the post.

Speaking about Campana’s miss after the match, Martino said, “When Campana missed the goal and we went to penalties, the 2 finals against Chile of the Copa América crossed my path. Luckily I was wrong.” Martino was referring to Argentina‘s penalty shootout defeat in the Copa America final in 2015 and 2016. However, thanks to Miami goalkeeper Drake Callender’s heroics, Martino didn’t have to experience his nightmare again.
