SUMMARY
- Premier League docks Everton off two points.
- The club faced a ten point deduction in November 2023.
The 23/24 season of Everton will certainly go down in the history books. It won’t be however due to the club’s on-field performances, but the problems it has faced with the Profit and Sustainability rules.
The club has been found guilty of breaching the Premier League’s PSR rules multiple times, which has resulted in severe point deductions. The Merseyside club’s love affair with points deduction continues, as the PL sanctions Everton FC yet again.

‘The Toffees’ have been docked two points for not meeting the PSR rules for the cycle ending 2022-23. Everton’s documented loss of $113 million in the last season of the given cycle was way over the mandated amount. Hence it was expected that the Merseyside club would be hit with not only one but two significant point deductions.
The two-point docking leaves Everton in 16th position with just 27 points. The Merseyside club is just two points off the relegation spots with the Merseyside club facing the prospect of going down to the EFL Championship for the first since the 1950-51 season.
Everton has had its fair share of trouble with sanctions in the 23/24 season
The two-point sanction is not however the first time ‘The Toffees’ have seen its points tally reduced. Everton was docked 10 points on November 2023 which had created havoc in the English soccer fraternity. Although many English clubs have been sanctioned in the past, the Merseyside club’s point deduction was the highest at the time.
The club was then fortunate enough, as their appeal against the sanction was acknowledged, and Everton’s point deduction was revised to 6 points. The nine-time English first-division winners were found guilty of breaching the PSR rules yet again in January along with Nottingham Forest. The Premier League had taken the breaches into account and announced the two-point deduction in April 2024.

The club will however be allowed to appeal against the Premier League’s decision. However, it also highlights how the smaller clubs in England have been targeted unnecessarily.
Many clubs like Chelsea and Manchester City have been accused of breaching the same rules, but no investigation has been initiated as of now. Farhad Moshiri. the majority owners of Everton and Co. have had to deal with sanctions after sanctions, while the elite clubs keep getting away with their wrongdoings.
Everton releases a statement after facing a two-point deduction

Everton has also thanked the PL for acknowledging the club’s ownership problems due to the Russia-Ukraine war. The club statement read, “In January 2024, Everton were charged by the Premier League for breaching the permitted Profit and Sustainability thresholds for the assessment period ending 2022/23.
