Bayern Munich fans haunted Manchester United and England fans with a chant that brought back memories from 27 years ago. The German club dominated Manchester United at Old Trafford to knock them out of the UEFA Champions League in the group stages, while fans in the away section added salt to the wounds.
The German fans sang the chants of “Football’s coming home,” in sarcasm to rile up Manchester United and English fans. The chant refers to a song released in 1996 by English comedians David Baddiel and Frank Skinner along with the rock band Lightning Seeds.
The song was released ahead of the Euro 1996. It marked the first major tournament hosted by England since the 1966 FIFA World Cup. The lyrics refer to the fact that Football (soccer) is coming back home to its birthplace. The song rose back to prominence in the 2020 UEFA Euro, where England went all the way to the final before losing the final to Italy.
Back in 1996, Germany knocked out England in the semi-final on penalties to dash all their hopes of lifting the title in front of the home ground. A feat that they achieved in 1966. Bayern Munich fans reused the famous song as a chant to mock the outgoing Manchester United and their current abysmal season under Erik ten Hag.

The defeat marked the second time in Manchester United’s history that they finished bottom of their group in the UEFA Champions League. The first time occurred back in 2005/06 when Manchester United was bottom of the Group D behind Villarreal, Benfica, and Lille.
Manchester United also became the first team to concede 15 goals in a group stage of this competition. They finished the group with only four points with one victory, one draw, and four defeats.
Bayern Munich fans trolled Manchester United players during warm-up
The onslaught from Bayern Munich fans began even before the kickoff. The German fans were filmed calling out the Manchester United players when they came out to warm up before the kickoff. A social media post revealed Bayern fans chanting: “You’re sh*t and you know you are.”
These chants were the theme during the warm-up while during the match it was a different story. Manchester United were being dominated by Bayern Munich on the field as the home fans sit numb to a dead silence. This lack of voice from Manchester United supporters was attacked by the Bayern Munich fans.

They started chanting: “Is this a library”? to rile up the atmosphere. Both, the team and fans of Manchester United had a night to forget at Old Trafford as the German won the night on and off the field.
The history between Bayern Munich and Manchester United goes way back to 1999. The teams were involved in the UCL final at Nou Camp in Barcelona. Bayern were leading the match till the 90th minute with a goal, but Manchester United came back with two goals in injury time to win an iconic UCL final.
Since then, Bayern Munich has always relished the opportunity to face the English side and this season they won both ties, home and away, to stamp their superiority in 2023. Manchester United is now out of the EFL Cup and UCL while being sixth in the Premier League. Another trophyless season might be on the horizon for the great English club.
