Jurgen Klopp has been one of the best managers in soccer over the last few years. The Liverpool boss has won six titles with the English club and boasts 11 major trophies in total. There is no doubt that Liverpool is one of the biggest clubs in the world. It is understandable that Klopp has had much of the spotlight since he took over in October 2015. But that has shed some light on some of his personal choices in life as well.
Many have pointed out a huge difference in Klopp’s appearance, compared to how he looked early on in his managerial career. That has raised questions over whether he has undergone any procedures/treatments to alter his appearance. His dazzling white teeth have been the talking point among fans in the last few years. There has been some very visible difference, which has left fans wondering how the man pulled it off.
In 2017, Klopp’s smile and teeth were looking a lot different than the previous years. It was during the Liverpool press conferences when the world noticed that his teeth were significantly whiter. The manager revealed the secret behind the transformation later on.
Who is Klopp’s dentist, Dr Robbie Hughes?
Liverpool fans will be familiar with Dr Robbie Hughes, the man who was behind many of the players’ smiles. He has been interviewed in the past by BBC, which is when he revealed how the conversation with Klopp went.
He said, “Working with Jurgen Klopp came about because he saw Roberto’s new teeth and decided he wanted to do something. When Jurgen came to see us, he basically just said he liked Roberto’s teeth, that he wouldn’t want to go quite as white, but he liked his teeth.”
But the manager cleared the air and mentioned to Soccer AM that Roberto Firmino was not the inspiration behind his decision to undergo the teeth whitening process.
Robbie Hughes graduated from the University of Liverpool in 2018, and aimed to make a mark on the cosmetic dentistry field. As per Dental Excellence, the Liverpool-based clinic he owns, the Englishman boasts impressive post-graduate degrees in restorative/aesthetic dentistry. Hughes is also experienced in teeth makeovers, which looks like what he has done with Klopp and Firmino.

Hughes was introduced to Liverpool players because of Martin Škrtel. A friend introduced him to the player back in 2008, and that was the start of his relationship with the Liverpool players. Lucas Leiva followed suit to undergo teeth whitening procedures. Philippe Coutinho, Firmino, Joe Gomez, and Divock Origi have also had sessions with him over the last few years.
Jurgen Klopp sheds light on the procedure he underwent
Klopp has always kept it transparent about the procedure he had to undergo to transform his teeth. Robbie Hughes mentioned that Klopp did not want his teeth to be as white as Firmino’s, but he wanted to make a huge change. The German coach has also mentioned that he has had to take antibiotics to tackle the issues that his teeth posed.
That was when Klopp decided to try something new with Hughes, eventually decided on the teeth whitening procedure. The former Borussia Dortmund coach has been all smiles ever since.
