Paul George recently discussed what Victor Wembanyama needs to find a great deal of success in the NBA. Most fans should be aware that Wemby is the hyped-up rookie from last season’s draft class. The San Antonio Spurs showed no hesitation in drafting him with the 1st pick of the 2023 draft under the assumption that he could transform the team into a dynasty.
However, things have not gone as well as expected for the Spurs during their first season with Wembanyama on the court. The Spurs actually finished the season with the worst record in the Western Conference at 21 wins and 61 losses. They clearly have a long way to go in order to even make the playoffs, let alone win a championship.
Paul George is the host of a podcast and discussed what Wemby is lacking with the Spurs. Since this should certainly be a matter of interest for fans, let us take a closer look and find out what George had to say on this topic.
Paul George thinks Victor Wembanyama needs an experienced point guard
Given that Victor Wembanyama stands well over 7 feet tall and is quite a versatile player when compared to the other stars in the league who are similar in size, one can only imagine what Wemby will be able to do if he is surrounded by a cast that is able to help him realize his full potential. The Los Angeles Clippers star explained just what Wemby needs in order to take his game to the next level.
“Say you had a CP or Rondo. Those guys who just know basketball…. Like Wemby go right there. Imma throw this sh*t as high as I can. Go catch and dunk it. Somebody that’s like will sit down and just explain the game to him like this. If they front you, just spin like that ball gonna be there.”
George concluded, “He don’t have that type of personnel around him to do that. And that’s really all it takes…They don’t have that player who knows how to find him and get him the ball in his spots where he can just be special”Currently, the Spurs do not have a very experienced or elite point guard. Therefore, there are several scoring opportunities that Wemby has missed taking advantage of. If they have a pass-first point guard with a good basketball IQ and an understanding of the game, the Spurs will do much better next season when compared to their performance this year.
Can the San Antonio Spurs build a championship dynasty around Victor Wembanyma?
The Spurs certainly have the right cornerstone to build a championship dynasty around with Victor Wembanyama. Given that he has a long way to go before reaching his prime, one can only imagine what a prime Wemby will be capable of doing on the basketball court.
Building a dynasty is not just about having one superstar. The San Antonio Spurs will undoubtedly have to fill their roster with a capable supporting cast in order to make the best of their situation and potential. Fans are left wondering if this team will make any significant trades in the near future.
