SUMMARY
- Georges St-Pierre holds several grappling records in the UFC including total takedowns landed.
- Although Kamaru Usman is considered one of the best wrestlers in the UFC, only Merab Dvalishvili is close to breaking GSP's total takedowns landed record.
Kamaru Usman is labeled as one of the best wrestlers on the current UFC roster. He has been labeled as the greatest welterweight of all time by UFC CEO Dana White. Many contradicted that statement by claiming that Georges St. Pierre is the best welterweight fighter of all time. Certainly, GSP’s stats claim he is the best wrestler who stepped foot inside the Octagon.
There is a certain disparity in grappling records between GSP and Usman. The Candian fighter is far ahead when comparing total takedowns landed, total top position time, and control time.
GSP leads the way overall in the UFC in all three stats. Usman comes into the top 10 only in control time. St-Pierre has taken down his opponents 90 times in 23 UFC fights. On the other hand, Usman has taken down his opponents 59 times in 18 UFC fights.
When it comes to control time, GSP has an extraordinary record of 2 hours, 42 minutes and 4 seconds. His total top position time is 2 hours, 22 minutes and 5 seconds. Meanwhile, Usman is 7th overall in the UFC in control time with 2 hours, 13 minutes and 55 seconds. The Nigerian Nightmare’s top position time equals 1 hour, 25 minutes and 29 seconds.
Usman is far from breaking GSP’s grappling records but there is a certain bantamweight who is making waves in the promotion with his wrestling. He is already close to breaking at least one record held by the Canadian.
Merab Dvalishvili will soon overtake Georges St-Pierre’s takedowns landed record
#1 contender for the UFC Bantamweight Title, Merab Dvalishvili, incorporated a huge amount of wrestling in his fights inside the Octagon. So much so that in his 12 UFC bouts, he has already landed 79 takedowns. He is just 11 away from equaling GSP’s record. With a few more fights under his belt, he will achieve that record soon.
However, when it comes to control time and top position time, Merab is far away from GSP. His control time is 1 hour 13 minutes and 17 seconds and his top position time is close to 40 minutes.
One reason for which Usman’s total takedown numbers are low could be his high control time. His control time of over two hours sets him up in a way where he does not have to attempt or land too many takedowns.
Except for the total takedowns record, GSP’s other records seem to be in safe hands. All other active fighters are far away from breaking it.
