At the end of a nine-year stint with the San Francisco 49ers, defensive end Arik Armstead signed a big-money deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Armstead revealed the actual reason why he quit the 49ers.
The defensive end joined the 49ers via the 2015 NFL draft as the first-round 17th pick. Armstead played high school football for Pleasant Grove and later moved to the University of Oregon. The former captain of the 49ers appeared in 116 NFL fixtures in the regular season while participating in 12 games in the postseason.
In the recently ended season, the defensive tackle managed to take his team into the Super Bowl but failed to touch the shining trophy. Armstead will step onto the pitch with the Jaguars, expecting to take the franchise to new heights after a poor season.
Arik Armstead revealed the reason behind leaving the San Francisco 49ers
During the defensive end’s last episode of his “Third And Long” podcast, he stated he felt extremely insulted due to the franchise’s offer. The franchise offered only a $6 million deal with an incentive of up to $8 million for merely one year, despite making it clear earlier that he wanted a long-term extension deal worth nearly $20 million.

Armstead said, “When they [49ers] sent that [offer] over, I did feel extremely disrespected. I don’t feel that level of compensation is nowhere near the type of player that I’m.” The defensive end continued, “Not even just the type of player that I am, what I’ve committed to the game, what I’ve committed to my team, what I’ve committed to the organization and in my community.”
Armstead also added that he didn’t feel like the offer truly represented who he is as a “player and a person.” The former number 91 of the 49ers also said he believed he had done more than most of the players on the team. Hence, the offer from the franchise just feels like a strong slap in the face.
Arik Armstead’s contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars
During the free agency period, when the 49ers and Arik Armstead could not reach a satisfying deal, the franchise released the defensive end. Soon after the release, Armstead signed a three-year contract with the Jaguars.
Armstead received an offer from the Jaguars worth $43,500,000, which included a signing bonus of $12,500,000 and a guaranteed sum of $28,000,000. The deal will tie the quarterback until 2027, and he hopes to have a fresh start after the beginning of the new season at his new home.
