SUMMARY
- Russell Wilson joined the Denver Broncos in 2022, breaking his previous contract with the Seattle Seahawks.
- The Offensive Line and Broncos seem to be parting ways soon, reportedly due to the coach, Sean Payton, not wanting to play with the player anymore.
Denver Broncos is not one of the wealthiest franchises in the NFL, but they do purchase and renew players by offering big-money contracts. Russell Wilson joined the franchise in 2022 from the Seattle Seahawks. Broncos and Wilson were excited to start their journey together in the NFL and had a lot of expectations from each other. The star joined the franchise by breaking the contract with the Seahawks that will end in 2024.
The 35-year-old signed a 4-year contract with the 2013 Super Bowl champions worth $140 million on April 15, 2019, before leaving for the Broncos. However, the expectations didn’t convert into reality, and even after offering a $242,588,236 contract to the quarterback, the club and the player are looking to part ways soon. According to some sources, the Broncos will release Wilson on March 17.

If the Broncos say goodbye to Wilson in March, then they will cost $50 million as dead money in 2024. However, there is a second option for the Broncos, that is, if they wait till June of next season. But that option will also not be very beneficial for the Broncos. Even if they do so, they should cost $124 million in salary, $35.4 million, and $49.6 million in dead cap money for 2024 and 2025.
As a result, after offering such a big contract to Wilson, there is no way back for the Broncos to owe less. Wilson’s stats with the franchise are pretty decent, and the player appeared for 30 fixtures in two seasons. In those fixtures, he made 42 passing touchdowns, 19 interceptions, 100 sacks, six rushing touchdowns, and covered 618 rushing yards.
Why do the Denver Broncos want to part ways with Russell Wilson?
The news of the Denver Broncos and Russell Wilson’s early breakup shocked many fans and critics of the NFL. The relationship between the player and the club deteriorates when the franchise decides to bench the star for the last two games of this season.
Few sources claimed that the reason behind their breakup was that the newly appointed head coach, Sean Payton, was not comfortable playing with the quarterback. It is also reported that the decision to release the quarterback is not taken by any director or owner of the franchise, it is completely decided by Payton himself.
Payton wants to avoid running the team’s offensive line anymore with the former Seattle Seahawks man. This will be a new challenge for the star to find a new home for him if the club dismisses him in the upcoming season.
The number 3 did manage to win multiple trophies in the NFL during his 11 years of career. Besides winning the Super Bowl, the player also earned the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year award, 9 Pro Bowls, the Bart Starr Award, and more.
