SUMMARY
- Alex Pereira beat Jamahal Hill via TKO to retain his light heavyweight title at UFC 300.
- Recently, Joe Rogan and Max Holloway shared an interesting observation on the outcome.
Max Holloway is at an all-time high after UFC 300. In one of the greatest last-second finishes of all time, he knocked out Justin Gaethje to win the BMF belt. The video of the KO has gone viral and has generated millions of impressions. After the fight, Holloway went to Joe Rogan’s JRE podcast and had an interesting observation about the main event between Jamahal Hill and Alex Pereira.
In the UFC 300 main event, the light heavyweight champion Alex Pereira defeated Jamahal Hill via TKO. However, in “The Joe Rogan Experience” with Max Holloway, both Joe and Holloway discussed an interesting theory. Right before the KO, there was a groin strike from Hill which was deemed illegal by the ref Herb Dean, and he was about to stop the bout momentarily. However, Pereira did not oblige and went ahead with the fight.
While it created a memorable moment for the fans, as per Joe Rogan, the move may not have been ideal for Hill. As per the 56-year-old UFC commentator, Jamahal “Sweet Dreams” Hill may have been confused about the referee’s actions after the groin strike. Rogan speculated whether the decision from Dean to interfere at the time made Hill drop his guard, which benefited the Brazilian fighter.
Joe Rogan and Max Holloway dissect the UFC 300 finish between Alex Pereria and Jamahal Hill
Joe Rogan was on the call for the UFC 300 main event between Alex Pereira and Jamahal Hill. While the entire world was dazzled by what Pereira did, the dust is now settling and some interesting opinions about the finish are coming out. As previously mentioned, both Joe Rogan and Max Holloway had their say on the topic during JRE MMA Show #155.
Joe added, “The fight had restarted. But would that position have taken place if it wasn’t for Jamahal relaxing, giving him the thumbs up?”
In response, Max added that Hill should never have relaxed as the fighters are always told to protect themselves at all costs. The Hawaiian fighter said, “If I was in his situation, I don’t give a f*ck what the (situation was), I’d have told Herb Dean, ‘Motherf*cker, are we going?’ I’d have been like ‘Come on.’ I still would have been ready. It’s protect yourself at all times.”
The stand-up comedian then went through the footage leading up to the KO. Rogan thought that Hill was doing a good job of maintaining the distance from Pereira. However, after the groin strike, he seemed to stop for a second which allowed Pereira to close the gap between them and ultimately secure the KO.
Rogan said, “Now it’s a mistake by Jamahal, protect yourself at all times. But also, it does seem like there’s a moment of confusion because he (Pereira) does close that distance significantly. It’s like a double step.”
The former ‘Fear Factor’ host also praised Hill for handling the loss well. However, both Rogan and Holloway seemed to be in agreement that the 32-year-old should never have let his guard down while he was inside the Octagon. Hill, who has not suffered a long medical suspension, is set to return on June 29 at UFC 303, against another heavy hitter, Khalil Rountree Jr.
Jamahal Hill says Magomed Ankalaev can beat Alex Pereira
After the UFC 300 win, Alex Pereira is out there enjoying his life. However, the light heavyweight division has not stopped and contenders like Jiri Prochazka and Magomed Ankalaev are waiting in the wings to have their crack at the championship. Pereira has already beaten Prochazka, so Jamahal Hill wants to see Ankalaev get the next shot at the champion. And, according to the Chicago native, Ankalaev beats Pereira.
He said, “Magomed’s stance is a problem against Pereira. Pereira doesn’t fight well against southpaws.” Hill continued, “Magomed also comes with a very grapple-heavy approach as well as he picks decent shots and he is capable on the feet. So I’d probably favor Magomed in that fight.”
Alex Pereira revealed his wish to fight at the upcoming Brazil PPV, UFC 301. It will be interesting to see if the bout gets booked for that card. However, as things stand, it seems highly unlikely. What do you think is next for the 205lbs champion? Let us know in the comments below.
