Dwyane Wade caught NBA fans off guard with a recent announcement indicating his interest to invest in a WNBA team. As some of us might be aware, the WNBA is a league affiliated with the NBA and is a platform for female basketball players to display their talents at a professional level.
Although many fans don’t consider the WNBA to be in the same league as the NBA, the fact remains that is is certainly a growing base and has much potential. It even garnered attention from 3x NBA champion and Miami Heat legend Dwayne Wade.
After having retired from playing basketball, Wade has officially entered the world of business and is always looking for the next best thing to invest in. With that being said, let us take a closer look at how D-Wade feels about the WNBA and a potential investment.
Will Dwyane Wade invest in the Chicago Sky?
Not many fans will know much about the WNBA teams. After all, it is a relatively new league when compared to the NBA and only started in 1997. Since its conception, the WNBA has looked to provide women with the opportunity to display their basketball talents to the rest of the world.
There are currently only 12 WNBA teams across the league. Many have criticized the WNBA over the years for its poor management and inability to generate real revenue in contrast to the NBA. In fact, it is common knowledge that the NBA pours some of its funds into the WNBA just to keep the league functioning.
Despite these reasons, D-Wade still feels that the Chicago Sky is a team worth investing in. WNBA fans will know that the Chicago Sky recently won a WNBA championship in 2021 by defeating the Phoenix Mercury in the WNBA Finals. Perhaps the recent success of the franchise has played a part in increasing Wade’s interest in investment.
Although one could argue that his statement is open-ended and somewhat cryptic, there was certainly an underlying interest in the Sky from the Miami Heat legend, “I’ve taken a deep look at the WNBA, a deep look at the Chicago Sky, and a deep look at if this is a place that Dwyane Wade should be part of. In due time, a decision will be made.”
