The Super Bowl LVIII is probably the most breathtaking game ever played in NFL history. Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers faced each other at the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. Before the match began, it was expected to be an end-to-end competition.
Therefore, the expectation seemed to be coming true during the game’s early stages as the first quarter finished with a 0-0 score. However, from the beginning of the second quarter, the Chiefs looked too unstable and ended the quarter with a scoreline of 10-3 in favor of the 49ers. But as the question is about the Super Bowl, no one would allow the opponents to win it so easily. And that’s what the Chiefs did.
They made a blustery comeback in the third quarter and finished the quarter 13-10. In the end, with the help of overtime rule, the Chiefs won their second Super Bowl in a row, and the 49ers left the pitch with tears. Eventually, after the game, a controversy arose as fans and experts disagreed with the NFL overtime rule and said the rule was balderdash.
What did Tiki Barber say about the overtime rule in the NFL?
Soon after the final whistle, the Chiefs players and fans went wild inside the stadium and began celebrating. But the way they had won their second consecutive Super Bowl was not liked by many, and everyone blamed the NFL for that. Following the Chiefs Super Bowl LVIII during an interview, Tiki Barber, former New York Giants star, delivered his opinion about the overtime rule.
Tiki Barber thinks the new #NFL playoff OT rules are “absolute NONSENSE” and says that time has to be a factor.

Barber said, “The new NFL overtime rule in the playoffs is nonsense, it’s absolutely nonsense. To make the clock mean nothing is nonsense.” The former running back said, “The clock has to end the game. I understand why they do it this way because you want to be fair, but it takes all the urgency out of football.”
Quotes from Barber suggest the rule is just spoiling the football’s natural thing, which is time. After disagreements from fans and an individual like Barber, NFL authorities must focus on finding any other procedure to give a fair conclusion to the games.
What is overtime rule in the NFL?
The National Football League authority introduced the rule as a modification of sudden death. The directive’s objective is to decide the winner of a tie game during 2010 postseason fixtures. Nonetheless, authorities chose to use the rule in every NFL game after two seasons.
According to the new NFL rule, both teams can score in the game, which is tying after regular time. The rule says if the first team scores a touchdown, then, the other team will get possession to tie again with a touchdown of their own. Despite that, all the different rules will remain the same.
The latest modification in the rule came on March 29, 2023, when franchise owners voted to change the rule. Eventually, the most essential reality is that some players were unaware of this rule during the Super Bowl LVIII fixture. Few players from the 49ers, such as Kyle Juszczyk and Arik Armstead, had no idea about the rule. Mahomes admitted Mecole Hardman Jr. looked confused too on whether he had won the game or not.
