Daniel Cormier has taken to his work as a commentator quite well. Following an illustrious career inside the Octagon, DC has found his calling as a commentator and content creator. However, his recent take on Dustin Poirier has not gone down well with fans.
With the end of the year almost upon, fans have naturally started looking forward to what comes next. As such, the milestone UFC 300 is also set to take place in 2024. Thus, many fighters have already started throwing their names in the hat. One such notable name is Dustin Poirier, who is looking for a new dance partner after his BMF title loss at UFC 291.
Naturally, ‘The Diamond’ has made his thoughts very clear about wanting to be a part of UFC 300. Among some of the names touted for a potential fight, there is Conor McGregor, who has also expressed his desire to settle the score. Speaking about a potential fourth fight, Cormier says, “When he has now beaten McGregor two in a row, there should not be any hesitancy to fight him again”.
For the most part, McGregor is meant to make his return against Michael Chandler, as he himself stated. However, at the same time, he is very keen to get one back against Dustin Poirier. Although the Poirier fight is a big one, it is understood that Chandler will get his turn first. On the other hand, Cormier also believes that, since every other fighter is booked, Poirier should fight Islam Makhachev.
Daniel Cormier completely forgot about Dustin Poirier losing to Justin Gaethje at UFC 291
At first hearing, many may feel that they misheard what Daniel Cormier said. However, it is clear that DC truly wants to see Dustin Poirier get the next shot against Islam Makhachev. One of DC’s co-hosts understood that, even though there was no clear fight for him, Dustin could not be put in with Makhachev right now.
Surprisingly, Cormier vehemently objects to the take and asks why Poirier cannot be matched up with Makhachev. “Why can’t you put him (Dustin) in with Islam though? He won his last fight”. Here, one of the co-hosts then said that Charles Oliveira is meant to be the next contender for Islam‘s throne. Whilst Cormier sees the viewpoint of the co-host, he continues to disagree whilst hailing Poirier as an ‘elite’ lightweight fighter.

Understandably, many fans were left rather disappointed with the episode, owing to the bad takes and mistakes throughout. As such, fans piled on Cormier for forgetting that Poirier got head-kicked into oblivion by Justin Gaethje during their BMF title fight. Surprisingly, the 44-year-old also went on to mention Gaethje’s BMF title win but did not seem to realize that it came against Poirier.
All things considered, it is perhaps understandable that Daniel Cormier forgot about the fight. In a year that has delivered so many memorable moments, it is possible to forget a few. With that said, it leaves Dustin Poirier in a precarious situation, and without a big-name fight. Who would you pick to be Poirier’s opponent for UFC 300? Leave us your thoughts in the comments below.
