Canelo Alvarez is all set for his next big fight. After a lot of talk and back and forth regarding negotiations, things have finally worked out and we’ll be seeing the boxer take to the ring. Amid preparations for the fight, Canelo has enlisted help from an unexpected party.
For those unaware, it was previously announced that Canelo Alvarez will be returning against Jaime Munguia on May 4, which is also the Cinco De Mayo weekend. Prior to the announcement of the fight against Munguia, there was a lot of talk regarding David Benavidez as a potential opponent. However, with Benavidez’s manager, making false claims of a $55 million purse, the fight never materialized.

Instead, it was expected that Canelo would be fighting either Jaime Munguia or Jermall Charlo next. Despite his rivalry with Charlo, having beaten his twin already, Munguia was finally selected as the official opponent. A fellow Mexican boxer and the WBC Silver super middleweight champion, Jaime will be challenging for Alvarez’s undisputed super middleweight titles on May 4, 2024, at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Canelo Alvarez does not want his son to pursue boxing
Ahead of the fight, Canelo Alvarez, as always has been very diligent with his practice and preparations. Whilst Jaime Munguia may not be a name that the general public is familiar with, the 27-year-old is a dangerous and well-rounded opponent, someone who can give Saul a run for his money. That said, ahead of his final preparations, Canelo bid farewell to his family in Truckee, California.
During his preparations, Canelo has had his children beside him, particularly his son, who could be seen giving him a hard time in sparring. Speaking on the second episode of Gloves Off: Canelo vs Munguia, Saul can be seen talking about his son, Saul Adiel Alvarez whom he holds very dear.
“My son is very talented. I tell him I want him to be an F1 driver or a golfer or anything else. He says no, I want to be a boxer. So, at the end of the day, it’s not what I want.
He learns quickly, but his best trait is that he loves it. Since he’s talented, I think he can get as far as he wants. We’ll see what the future holds. Obviously, if he stays the course, and becomes a boxer, I’ll support him.”
In the past, Canelo Alvarez has been very vocal about his son potentially pursuing boxing as a career. Stating the hard work and sacrifice that it entails, Alvarez has made it clear that he prefers his children to go for different sports. Seeing the brutal nature of the sport and the impact it can have on one’s health, it is understandable why Saul feels this way.

In 2014, Canelo met Fernanda Gomez, who would go on to become his wife. Currently, the couple have a daughter together named Maria Fernanda Álvarez, born in 2018. Like his son, Saul has a close relationship with his daughter Maria as well.
