Former interim Lightweight Champion and one of the best boxers in the UFC, Dustin Poirier, has announced his next move. After failing to acquire the BMF title from opponent Justin Gaethje, Poirier had a lot of thinking to do. Dustin has only headlined PPV events in his last couple of fights and, as such, has many options ahead of him.
UFC 291 was not the first time Poirier has come up short inside the octagon. Yet, he was more affected by the loss, as Poirier believes that he is a better fighter than Gaethje. The Diamond also hinted at a possible retirement route, stating that he would not continue fighting for the sake of fighting.

However, nearly a month after his loss, Dustin has affirmed that he will be fighting again this year. The Lightweight fighter was recently questioned about his plans for the year ahead by a fan. To this, The Diamond responded, saying he would be entering the octagon one more time before the year ends.
Dustin gave a hint by tweeting, “I’m going to fight again this year“. With the Louisiana native ready to put his loss behind him, he will have to pick a suitable opponent for his return. He might continue his run in the lightweight division or even move up a division like he’s always said.
Possible matchups for Dustin Poirier’s upcoming bout
With Dustin Poirier confirming his return, fans are surely interested to see who The Diamond ends up fighting. Poirier has fought several elite fighters in the lightweight division and has stated that he won’t be fighting fresh talent in the division. Let’s take a look at the possible matchups for Poirier’s return.
After knocking out Dustin Poirier at UFC 291, Justin Gaethje had settled the scores. Both fighters are now 1-1 against each other and might just go for a tiebreaker. Poirier mentioned during his post-fight interview that he would love another fight with Justin as their scores are tied.
Justin Gaethje is also ready to offer Dustin a trilogy bout as he is grateful to The Diamond for accepting a rematch. Another great choice would be former Featherweight Champion Max Holloway. The Hawaiian fighter has lost three title fights to Alexander Volkanovski and might soon move up a weight class.
Max had fought Dustin twice in the past and lost both bouts via submission and decision. A trilogy between the two technical strikers is also another highly anticipated fight fans would love to watch.
Apart from the two, Dustin could also make a move to the Welterweight division after his epic run at Lightweight. Poirier has always wanted to challenge Colby Covington for his derogatory comments about his wife. However, with Chaos fighting for the title this year, he might have to consider fighting another opponent.
Regardless, Dustin has many options ahead of him and might soon declare his opponent to the fans. Who do you think Dustin should fight next? Let us know in the comments.
