There have been quite some cases around NBA players having legal off-court issues. These problems lead to one paying a handsome sum to another. Such was the case of Steve Nash, though he had somehow avoided it. In 2001, Nash had one of the best seasons of his career, arguably his best season with the Dallas Mavericks. It was around the same time that Nash met Alejandra Amarilla. The two fell in love and had two kids in the year 2004.
At that point, Nash had returned to Phoenix after playing for the Mavs for six seasons. Following the 2004-05 season, Nash and Amarilla tied the knot. Everything seemed pretty normal in Nash’s life. He had won two consecutive MVP awards and had led the league in assists for three straight seasons. Though a few years later, Nash’s off-court life would become a nightmare for him.
Why didn’t Steve Nash want his family to move to LA?
There were quite some rumors around Amarilla cheated on Nash with his then-teammate, Jason Richardson. The rumors did end as rumors, as there was no real proof behind them. Still in Phoenix, Nash and Amarilla had their third child in 2010.
Richardson was traded to the Orlando Magic the month after and Nash and Amarilla had announced their divorce. Following their divorce, Nash played another season with the Suns, following which he joined the Lakers.
Nash had not won a single championship till then, and playing alongside Kobe Bryant and the Lakers, he had a pretty good shot. Though this was not the reason why he came to LA. Steve had the option to join the Knicks, but he decided to join the Lakers as it was the best for his family. Amarilla wanted to move to LA, but Steve had told her not to. According to Nash, he believed that he would be traded by the Lakers or he was nearing his retirement.
As per TMZ, Amarilla then argued that Steve was avoiding paying child support, as he would have to give in a certain amount, living in California. Whereas in Arizona, Nash did not have to worry about child support, as the state did not impose such laws.
Steve would go on to play yet another season with the Lakers, after which he finally announced his retirement. A judge later restrained an order on Amarilla, not allowing her to move to California. However, Amarilla did manage to get a ruling in her favor, after the court ordered Nash to pay more in child support.
