- The Spurs rookie has more games with 7+ blocks this season than Rudy Gobert has had his entire career.
Victor Wembanyama has been outstanding this season. His rookie campaign has been one of the best ones in recent history. The 20-year-old hasn’t made it through the entire season but he’s had multiple stellar performances that have nearly made him surpass some of the greatest players ever. Wemby almost became the fifth player in league history to record a quadruple-double during a recent matchup between the San Antonio Spurs and Denver Nuggets.
And as a rookie, his defensive presence has been impeccable. Wembanyama has had incredible duels against Nikola Jokic and Giannis Antetokounmpo, two former MVPs. Victor has gotten the entire league on edge, so much that even Jokic couldn’t help but praise him after recording four blocks against himself. While he is the obvious pick for the 2024 Rookie of the Year Award, Wembanyama is also very close to winning the Defensive Player of the Year Award as well.
Victor Wembanyama ranks second to Rudy Gobert in DPOY odds

Right now, the Spurs rank third in the league in blocks averaging 6.4 per game. According to Fox Sports, Rudy Gobert is currently -3030 in DPOY odds. Gobert is already a 3x DPOY and he’s making a solid run for his fourth. Victor ranks second to Gobert at +850. While there is a huge gap between both odds, there is a high chance that Wembanyama could be named the DPOY over Gobert for a few reasons like this.
Victor Wembanyama has more games with 7+ blocks than Rudy Gobert
There is an incredible career feat that recently came up following the Spurs’ visit to the FedEx Forum to play against the Memphis Grizzlies. Victor Wembanyama recorded seven blocks along with 18 points, 7 rebounds, and 6 assists. Luckily, the game also resulted in a win for the Spurs. This marked his eighth game with 7 blocks or more. Wemby managed to achieve this within 70 games of his NBA career while Gobert has only recorded seven of such games in 754 appearances.

Incredibly, Wembanyama has been averaging 4.3 blocks per game in the Spurs’ last 10 games. Now, if the rookie manages to overthrow the Minnesota Timberwolves player, he will become the first-ever NBA freshman to win the DPOY title in addition to the ROTY Award.
