SUMMARY
- Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Hailey Summers have welcomed their first-born.
- The couple named the child Ares Alexander, and it has a very interesting meaning behind it.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has been experiencing one of his greatest highs in the sport of basketball this year. After bringing the Oklahoma City Thunder back into the limelight, the guard is now one of the finalists for the MVP title. Besides that, SGA is slowly transitioning into the newest face of the franchise, the first since Russell Westbrook’s departure in 2019.
While he already has a ton of reasons to celebrate, SGA and his wife, Hailey Summers revealed that they welcomed their first-born child. Summers went into labor on April 25, in the middle of the OKC Thunder vs New Orleans Pelicans series. Luckily, Gilgeous-Alexander didn’t have point guard duties to attend to as they had just finished Game 2. SGA and Summers were together for many years dating back to her college days at the University of Albany. They got married on Valentine’s Day 2024.
Ares Alexander’s name is truly a reference to Shai Gilgeous-Alexander
Yes, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Hailey Summers have named their son Ares Alexander. However, there is a very interesting meaning behind the name and it is a direct reference to SGA himself. For those who don’t have much knowledge of Greek Mythology, Ares (the god of war) is the son of Zeus (the god of thunder).

Sounds familiar? Gilgeous-Alexander indirectly called himself the god of thunder or OKC. SGA has certainly been having a career year averaging 27.3 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists, and 1.5 steals per game. During the regular season, the MVP candidate put up 30.1 points, 5.5 rebounds, 6.2 assists, and 2 steals per game. Shai remained one of the top three scorers in the league ranking amongst Joel Embiid and Luka Doncic. Interestingly, both individuals are/were MVP candidates as well.
NBA fans were left speechless by Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s son’s name
Well the true meaning behind Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s son’s name remains unknown but the OKC star couldn’t have made it more obvious. Many users on X initially thought it was an announcement for SGA winning the MVP title as most pages captioned their posts with “Congratulations, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander”. However, Sportscenter revealed the meaning behind the name “Ares” in a post and fans couldn’t help but fall in love with it.
One fan said, “This guy be dropping bars on his kids birth certificates.” Another fan added, “SGA insinuating he’s Zeus the God of Thunder (OKC Thunder), and his son Ares, is the God of War.” Hopefully, with all the good news 2024 has come bearing for SGA, it also entails a championship run as well. OKC is waiting for the LA Clippers vs Dallas Mavericks series to end at the moment. The winner of that series will be OKC’s second-round opponents.
