Caitlin Clark only keeps delivering record-breaking performances. It doesn’t seem like the 22-year-old has any intention of settling with what she’s got right now. Recently, we all know she shattered the NCAA Women’s Basketball scoring record that was set by Kelsey Plum in 2017. She broke the record and surpassed Plum’s career feature well within the number of games she took to set it. At this pace, the Iowa Hawkeyes point guard has also set herself up to become the NCAA’s overall all-time leader in points. This record was set by Pete Maravich almost 50 years ago. Right now, Clark stands 18 points away from breaking the former NBA legend’s record.
Caitlin Clark passed Lynette Woodard as the major college all-time leading scorer
February has been nothing short of historical when it comes to Caitlin Clark. She has been averaging 32.2 points, 7.4 rebounds, and 8.7 assists per game. She’s already achieved elite status as a Hawkeyes player. During a recent matchup against the Minnesota Golden Gophers team, Clark recorded an incredible triple-double. She finished with 33 points, 10 rebounds, and 12 assists including 2 steals to procure the victory.
However, she also made history by passing Lynette Woodard as the leading major college scoring leader. Woodard was one of the most prominent figures in the WNBA during the 90s. She highlighted Clark’s performance saying, “I know what it must mean to her because I’ve been there… I think she’s an awesome player. I would love to meet her.” Being showered with love from legends of the sport may feel wondrous. But overtaking those same individuals might be a whole other feeling.
Caitlin Clark prepares herself to make NCAA history
The Hawkeyes are set to make another great run in the post-season this year potentially. But win or lose, this year will be special considering how far Caitlin Clark has come. But it doesn’t seem like Clark is aware of whom she is challenging in terms of career milestones. Maravich is known as the greatest NCAA player ever, who holds multiple tournament titles.
“Pete’s record, that’s getting closer and closer. I vividly remember even people in high school coming up to me and talking about Pete, and [saying] ‘You need to watch him on YouTube,’” she said according to ESPN. However, her main goal is to overcome Ohio State. Clark also managed to recently break the record for most three-pointers in a single season following the Iowa vs. Minnesota game.
