The relationship between Earlitha ‘Cookie’ Johnson and Earvin ‘Magic’ Johnson has experienced its fair share of fluctuating circumstances throughout the years. Mrs. Johnson has stuck by Johnson throughout his relationship iniquity. But a few decades ago, Johnson discovered that he had a son with a different woman, putting his relationship on fragile foundations. As a result, he had to confess something big to his wife.
In association with AppleTV+, Magic Johnson has released a mini-documentary series. ‘They Call Me Magic’ explores Johnson’s life from his tenure at Michigan State to his time in the NBA as well as beyond, as do numerous documentaries. The bond between him and his wife, Cookie Johnson, is highlighted in episode two, “Buck.”
Johnson considers his then-recent increase in fame in the documentary’s second episode. Furthermore, he talks about the obstacles in his relationship with Cookie Johnson, his future wife. Johnson’s eldest son, Andre, was mostly responsible for the chaos. Andre was conceived by Johnson and his then-lover, Melissa Mitchell. However, the two separated, leaving Johnson to raise Andre by himself.
“That was important, for her to know Andre. You know, it’s always still awkward and tough. And I told her, I said, one thing I’m gonna always do is be in his life and I’m gonna take care of my son“, Magic Johnson said.
But when Johnson and Cookie reconciled and got married in 1991, things became complicated. Johnson recalls the awkward chat the two had over Andre in the documentary. Johnson, however, was assured of what was going to happen with his son. He considered his audacious promise to Cookie that he would always be there for his son, no matter what.
