Shams Charania reveals that Joel Embiid will undergo surgery
It was initially reported that Joel Embiid sustained a meniscus injury on his left knee. Taking into consideration the fact that Embiid has undergone a lot of knee and leg injuries in his career so far, this alone was quite bad news in the first place. Initially, it was unclear whether his meniscus was partially or completely torn. However, Shams made his situation quite clear.
“Joel Embiid has a meniscus tear in his left knee. He had multiple evaluations, doctor consultations. He went through decision-making. Whether you rest and rehab this injury. It’s a displaced flap on the meniscus type of tear. He decided to undergo surgery very soon. I’m told that the hope is Embiid misses 1-2 months. That’s the best case minimum scenario.”
“I’m told that the hope is that [Joel] Embiid misses one to two months…If a full repair is needed in surgery, that’s going to be a significantly longer recovery time period.”@ShamsCharania updates on Joel Embiid’s injury.

Shams continued, “Only the severity of the tear and the procedure itself will determine how long he’s going to be out.”
Charnia’s report certainly reveals a grim predicament that Embiid is currently undergoing. Being one of the best players in the NBA and requiring serious surgery could be devastating.
Can Embiid return in time for the playoffs?
As Shams reported, the best-case scenario is for Embiid to miss 1-2 months under the assumption that he gets the surgery done immediately. The exact severity of the tear and the potential complications of the surgery are information that only Joel’s doctors and other medical professionals will have access to. Not having their best player on the court is undoubtedly going to hurt the 76ers’ standing in the Eastern Conference.
