The New Orleans Pelicans have been closely monitoring the health of their guard CJ McCollum, who has been dealing with a pneumothorax (collapsed lung) for the past two weeks. Pelicans coach Willie Green gave an important update stating, “He [CJ McCollum] can work out.” This four-word message shows improvement in McCollum’s condition and progress in his recovery journey.
“They are still working it out with the doctors. They want to make sure CJ gets to the floor healthy and safely. … Once they give us his timeline, we will know more.” McCollum stated that the team is in constant touch with medical professionals to ensure McCollum’s safe return to the court.
CJ McCollum update, per Willie Green:
“They are still working it out with the doctors. They want to make sure CJ gets to the floor healthy and safely. … Once they give us his timeline, we will know more. Right now, he can work out. But it’s really in their hands.”

According to the Mayo Clinic, a collapsed lung happens when air leaks into the space between the lung and chest wall, potentially leading to a partial or complete lung collapse. Common symptoms include sudden chest pain and shortness of breath, and in some cases, there are serious life-threatening complications.
The Pelicans remain cautious, noting that McCollum’s pneumothorax is minor, which could suggest a less severe situation. But this isn’t McCollum’s first experience with such an injury. He previously suffered a similar issue in 2021 while playing for the Portland Trail Blazers.
CJ McCollum diagnosed with collapsed lung
CJ McCollum’s recent diagnosis of a collapsed lung is his second time in the past two years. The first time it took place in December 2021, resulting in an 18-game absence over six weeks. Despite the diagnosis, McCollum has remained positive, humorously responding to social media posts about his condition.
This is an insane pic to post with the news 😂 https://t.co/wcjiOKRvhh

With McCollum’s temporary absence, the Pelicans have adjusted their lineup. The team was already facing challenges with Jose Alvarado out due to a sprained ankle. As a result, Dyson Daniels stepped into the starting lineup and Kira Lewis Jr. got more playing time. Having started six games this season, McCollum leads the team in minutes (34.3), assists (5.7), and is second in scoring average (21.7) and three-point percentage (38.0) per game.
Pelicans dominate over Kings, ending their six-game winning streak
Despite facing challenges due to McCollum’s health issues, the New Orleans Pelicans showed their strength in a recent game against the Sacramento Kings. The Pelicans won with a score of 129-93, ending the Kings’ six-game winning streak. This win was a result of outstanding efforts from Brandon Ingram who scored 31 points and Zion Williamson who added 26 points.
Williamson’s performance in the second quarter and Ingram’s in the third helped the Pelicans secure a major lead. The team showed impressive shooting accuracy both on the floor and beyond the arc, as well as a dominant presence in rebounds.
