SUMMARY
- Cameron Brink was selected 2nd overall in the 2024 WNBA Draft by the Los Angeles Sparks.
- Ahead of the draft, she called Seth and Steph Curry only to get declined by the Hornets guard.
Cameron Brink emerged as one of the greatest defensive players in NCAA Women’s Division I Basketball history in recent times at Stanford. She showed great potential not only on defense but in scoring as well while she played under Tara VanDerveer. Athletes like her only have one goal in mind, and that is to compete in the WNBA. Brink earned her shot at professional stardom in 2024 after she was selected by the LA Sparks as the 2nd overall pick.
There are many reasons why the Sparks will succeed tremendously under Brink’s tenure, firstly because they’re already top five in the league in defense. Brink also averaged 14 points per game during her college days while grabbing 9.1 rebounds and 3.1 blocks per game. Interestingly, her relationship with Steph Curry also came to light after she entered the college scene in 2020.
Cameron Brink gets disappointed by Seth Curry on draft night
Cameron Brink isn’t related to the Curry family by blood but their connection goes back years before their existence. On draft night, the Sparks rookie was accompanied by her parents, brother, and godmother, Sonya Curry. She revealed that she FaceTimed Steph and Seth before the draft, but both calls had seemingly different outcomes. While Steph answered the call and spoke to her, Seth apparently declined immediately.
“Right before I came here, I face-timed Steph [Curry] with Sonya, my godmother, and my mom. He said all these encouraging words, laughing we me. And we face-time Seth, and he hangs up immediately.”

She said, “Right before I came here, I FaceTimed Steph with Sonya, my godmother, and my mom. He said all these encouraging words, laughing with me. And we FaceTime Seth and he hangs up immediately.” However, there is no love lost between Cameron and her godbrother Seth. Over the years, the Currys have been a positive influence on Cameron and Steph has also mentored her on several occasions.
Cameron Brink and Steph Curry’s connection dates back to their parents’ college days
Steph Curry is a legend in his own right who never formed a relationship with Cameron Brink while he excelled in the NBA. However, pieces of their families connected years before both of them came into the limelight. Sonya Curry and Michelle Bain-Brink both attended Virginia Tech during their college days. Sonya competed in the sport of volleyball while Michelle excelled on the basketball court, just like her WNBA daughter.

Sonya and Michelle became extremely close and the bond stood strong years after they parted ways in life. Michelle eventually asked Sonya to be Cameron’s godmother, and Steph was probably around 13 years old. Brink’s mother worked as a product manager for Nike and played a huge role in creating Dawn Stanley’s signature shoe line. The Curry matriarch went on to pursue her dream of serving her community by establishing a Montessori school in North Carolina. Cameron would make frequent appearances at Steph’s basketball camps before joining college.
