“I’m taking my talents to South Beach.” Those Words sent reverberations throughout the entire NBA world when LeBron James uttered them on July 8th, 2010. James had just announced to the entire world that he would be signing with the Miami Heat and teaming up with resident champion and MVP candidate Dwayne Wade.

This was perhaps the most important and hyped-up free agency decision in the history of the league. It was such a big deal, that ESPN decided to make a whole special just for it. The ramifications of LeBron’s choice were such, that any team he joined besides the Cleveland Cavaliers would become instant title favorites. Add to that, his joining a team with one of the best guards in the league, and the media and the NBA were in shambles.
One person not happy with James’ decision, was the then-commissioner of the league David Stern. He even pushed for the cancellation of ‘The Decision’. Quoting former ESPN executive John Skipper, “I think [he didn’t like it] probably because the player was in charge here.”
As per reports, Stern even publicly stated that he believed the whole show was “ill-conceived, badly produced, and poorly executed.” That leads us to our next development in the league’s superstar power shift.
Did LeBron James’ ‘The Decision’ give superstars unprecedented power?
LeBron James ignoring the pleas of the Cleveland Cavaliers front office told the league and its superstars only one thing. It’s a new age and players are the ones in control, not owners, not GMs. The players are the ones that bring in the fans and the fans are the ones that pay the GM’s paychecks. Players had the authority to demand what they need for their contentment and if it wasn’t met they could simply leave.
LeBron leaving the Cavaliers meant that he was destroying the previous tradition that was sunk deep into the roots of the NBA and that was loyalty to the team and city. Superstars weren’t used to being in control of their careers and having the option to leave before winning a championship for their drafted city.

James’ move might have caused a domino effect that was evidenced by players like Kawhi Leonard demanding a trade from the San Antonio Spurs after disagreeing with the management, or even Kevin Durant allegedly “running away from the grind” when he chose to sign with the Golden State Warriors and form the greatest superteam to ever exist.
All in all, ‘The Decision’ shaped the league into the player-centric entity it is now. Superstars have been believed to hold all the control and it’s the front office’s job to keep them happy.
