During the 2023 NBA Draft, one person grabbed the attention of basketball fans, Eve Wembanyama. While it wasn’t her who got drafted, she was someone the world got to know about when her brother, Victor Wembanyama got drafted. He has been playing exceptionally well in the NBA and chances are we might be witnessing another GOAT in the making. But it turns out, that Victor’s sister Eve has all the qualities to make it to the WNBA.
Eve Wembanyama was born on February 10, 2001, which makes her three years older than Victor. She began her basketball Journey before her brother and also inspired him to compete as well. Eve was the first out of the lot to achieve success in the sport and has played for the French National Team on various occasions including 3×3 international games. As a teenager, she helped France win the bronze medal at the U-16 FIBA Women’s European Championship.
Much like Victor, Eve Wembanyama also competed for various basketball clubs in France. Her most notable appearance was with the EuroLeague’s Women’s LDLC ASVEL club. In her most recent stint with Monaco, she averaged 5.4 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 1.8 assists per game. Eve’s stats aren’t as great as Victor’s but she shows similar tendencies to his game at times.
Eve Wembanyama doesn’t like being recognized as Victor Wembanyama’s sister
Victor Wembanyama made headlines back in 2022 after emerging onto the scene like an unstoppable force. During his final season playing in France, the NBA rookie averaged 21.6 points, 10.4 rebounds, 2 assists, and 3 blocks per game. Scouts around the world compared his performance to that of Michael Jordan and LeBron James. Considering how tall he is, Wemby has insane agility paired with the ability to shoot, score, and defend at a high level.
Eve Wembanyama and the rest of the family were proud of him for being selected No.1 overall. However, there’s one thing Eve isn’t happy about, that is being recognized as Victor’s sister rather than a basketball player herself.
She told La Gazette de Monaco, “I am pursuing my own career as a basketball player and not as someone’s sister. If journalists want to know more about Victor, they should contact him directly. This annoys my brother just as much as me. In the family, we are all very reserved and private, it is not our style to scatter information or spread out on each other.”
However, this is quite common for siblings and family members of prolific athletes. Eve Wembanyama has shown great dedication to her craft and fans hope to see her move to the United States to compete in the WNBA. Meanwhile, Victor has been making a mark on the league. NBA fans as possibly witnessing the league’s next best thing emerge right before their eyes.
