SUMMARY
- Rickey Hill gained prominence through the biopic "The Hill," which has contributed to his growing popularity.
- Hill's love for baseball started at a young age, using a stick as a bat and playing with stones by a railway track.
Rickey Hill is a baseball legend. Albeit a lesser-known one before the popularity of his biopic surged on Netflix. Now that his story is skyrocketing because of ‘The Hill,’ it definitely is not hurting his own popularity. And why would it? The film tells the story of the baseball phenom when he was young. Someone who was not beaten down by adversity, no matter what the universe threw at him.
There is something about the passion that Hill has for baseball that makes him the perfect main character for any sports biopic. Despite being born with a degenerative spine disorder, and the need for leg braces to walk, Rickey Hill found his love for baseball in the simplest of ways. Using a stick as a baseball bat and hurling stones by a railway track when he was five, was where he found his love for the ballgame.
Watching legends of the time, in the 1960s Hill saw Mickey Mantle basking in the stadium lights. In an arena of cheering crowds on television through his neighbor’s window. And standing right on that very stage became his life goal. He went on to have an incredible journey in baseball following that, and what a path he took!
His path and charisma have inspired many. So much so, that he has been getting calls from “some ladies” asking whether he’s still married. Well, the good news is upcoming for those ladies because he clarified in an interview with Fox Sports Insider that he is in fact not married.
Does Rickey Hill have kids?
Moving on to his former marriage, the film shows right near the end the pictures of 18-year-old Rickey Hill and his former wife Sherran getting married in a fairytale ceremony at Expos Stadium. His father, a pastor, officiated the ceremony. Notwithstanding their eventual divorce, the love they had for each other in their time together was apparent.
In a 2023 interview with Senior Planet, Hill openly shared about his family and the reason the couple got a divorce. “It was very hard for her (Sherran) being married to a baseball player. We had three wonderful daughters, but we’re no longer together. I can’t say I blame her. It was tough for her.”
Transitioning to a brighter note, Hill proudly spoke about his children and grandchildren, “We had three wonderful daughters. My grandkids are all baseball nuts. They’re little mini-me’s. And they’re very good, very talented.” Certainly, it appears that Hill not only loves baseball but baseball loves him back, as it continues to be in his life despite everything.
