AEW Double Or Nothing is done and dusted, and it was one of the most memorable events of the professional wrestling promotion’s recent history. While there were a lot of big moments on the show, nothing was bigger than the return of Maxwell Jacob Friedman, popularly known as MJF in the industry.
The 28-year-old superstar made his presence felt at the pay-per-view when Adam Cole was inside the ring, as he confronted Cole. Jacob entered the ring, and stared down at Cole for a brief period before hugging him. But soon after this, he hit Adam with a low blow and then suplexed his former friend before grabbing the mic for a promo.
At first, he talked about The Panama City Playboy, and after facing a betrayal, he’s not going to trust anyone. But after this, he turned his attention towards former WWE CEO, Mr. Vince McMahon, as he once again made a reference to the 78-year-old pro wrestling figure during the return promo on Double Or Nothing PPV.
Maxwell Jacob Friedman said, “I don’t need a New Japan or a Vince McMahon to make MJF, because MJF made MJF.” Even though he has made such references several times in the past too, the decision to do this during his return promo is something the audience didn’t expect, and that’s why everyone has been talking heavily about his trash talk about Vince.
WWE Universe lashes out at MJF for his controversial remarks
As soon as the WWE Universe took note of MJF’s controversial remarks involving Vince McMahon, they started lashing out at him. Pointing out how his comments don’t make much sense in the current era of the Triple H-led promotion, an audience member wrote, “Bro said vince like he’s still in charge.” (Via: X)
Sharing how Maxwell Jacob Friedman has made similar references to the Stamford-based promotion in the past too, a pro wrestling enthusiast said, “Some things never change.” “This is corny,” another fan commented after listening to the AEW star’s comments about the former WWE CEO.
MJF was rumored to leave AEW for WWE
While the anger of the audience over Maxwell’s comments is understandable, the possible reason why he said that could be that he was previously rumored to leave AEW for WWE. After he was taken off-screen from the Tony Khan-led promotion, a variety of theories started making their rounds on the internet.
One such theory was that MJF might be joining the Stamford-based promotion to take his wrestling career to greater heights. Even when Tony Khan was asked about Jacob’s contract status during a press conference, he didn’t give a clear answer, and it sort of increased fans’ trust in the theory that Friedman is potentially WWE-bound. Tony Khan stated: “MJF one of the biggest stars in AEW..I would love to get MJF back here soon”
But with the 28-year-old in-ring star’s recent return to the Jacksonville-based promotion, it’s clear that all that was just speculation. With MJF’s attack on Adam Cole, it’s obvious that AEW is set to continue the rivalry between these two superstars, and it’ll be interesting to see how things turn out to be in this feud.
