SUMMARY
- Adam "Edge" Copeland and Matt Hardy had a legendary feud during their time in WWE.
- Recently, the AEW star finally opened up on their rivalry decades later.
Adam Copeland, popularly referred to as Edge due to his legendary association with the WWE, is one of the greatest ever stars to enter the professional wrestling world. From entering the industry in 1992 to being forced to retire due to a serious neck injury and then returning to in-ring action after a long hiatus, Adam’s career has truly been an inspiration for many.
It’s been three decades since he started his journey as a pro wrestler, and during this time period, he has been a part of numerous legendary feuds. But if there’s one rivalry of The Rated-R Superstar that went extreme due to the impact of some real-life situations, it was the feud he had with former WWE superstar Matt Hardy.
These two had a real-life beef due to their love life issues, as Edge reportedly started seeing Matt’s girlfriend Lita when Hardy went on a hiatus due to a knee injury. After the former Tag Team Champion learned about it, the situation between them got really bad, and Copeland recently talked about that saga in an interview.
During his recent appearance on Chris Van Vliet’s podcast, Edge shared details about his issues with Matt Hardy and revealed how they handled everything despite the real-life heat they had. The Rated-R Superstar revealed how the company utilized on the hype around the feud and made a lot of money out of it.
Talking about the storyline they had after their beef, the former WWE Champion, “It’s like okay we’re here now let’s try and you know and also the companies wants to run with this let’s try and make a good story out of this a good program out of this let’s try and make some money out of this um because at that stage what else are you going to do.”
That’s how Adam and Matt Hardy took care of the whole situation between them, as they decided to put the personal aside and try and make some business out of this for the Stamford-based promotion. In fact, the thing they decided actually worked, as their on-screen rivalry became one of the most popular things in the pro wrestling world at that particular time phase, and it eventually helped WWE in terms of financial gains.
Edge shares his experience of working with Matt Hardy
While Edge admitted that he and Matt weren’t having that good of a relationship, he revealed how they still managed to compete alongside each other in the ring. Moreover, Copeland shared his experience of working with the 6-foot-2 in-ring performer and revealed other details about the legendary feud, which they had despite the real-life beef.
The Rated-R Superstar shared that even with everything that he and Matt had been through, they never had any doubt about working against each other. In fact, the AEW star revealed that they had already worked so much against each other that there was a sort of natural chemistry that was put on display whenever they got the opportunity to fight inside the ring.
Additionally, the WWE legend shared that as professionals, pro wrestlers need to have a lot of faith in their opponents, and that’s exactly what Matt and he had. In this way, Adam Copeland made it clear that their real-life situation didn’t have much of an impact on their in-ring performance, as they used to work with extreme professionalism inside the ring.
In another interview, Edge also talked about how the fans always used to feel uncertain about what was real and what was scripted in their feud due to the issues they had in real life. As their company took advantage of their love triangle beef by going with a similar on-screen storyline, it was something that always used to be a topic of discussion among the audience.
In fact, throughout the time period this angle was running on television, it was one of the most popular storylines in the entire pro wrestling industry. Moreover, amid all the uncertainty and twists that this feud had and the way fans were invested in it, this rivalry helped elevate Matt, Adam, and Lita to a higher level.
How did Edge and Matt Hardy finally get along in real life?
While their in-ring professionalism wasn’t much affected by their personal life issues, the heat between them stayed in place for a long time before they got along. As Edge was asked about the time he and Matt Hardy took to get along in real life, he had an interesting response to the question.
Sharing how things got fine after they realized certain aspects of the real-world situation around their feud, the pro wrestling veteran said, “I mean honestly it wasn’t that long I think kind of once we went through that and once we both realized oh okay still the same guys and still have the same chemistry still have the the same everything um so you know”
Additionally, Edge also stated that the audience probably took more time than them to come to the idea that these two are okay now. If we take a look at Adam’s comments, it’s pretty safe to say that it was his and Hardy’s intelligence that made things better, as the situation could have been even worse if they hadn’t handled it well.

Now, both of them are working outside of the Stamford-based promotion, as Copeland signed with All Elite Wrestling in late 2023, while Matt Hardy was recently seen in TNA. With both of these legends being in the last phase of their respective careers as performers, it’s unlikely that they would ever get involved in a WWE program, but as it’s said, never say never.
If the Triple H-led promotion ever gets the opportunity to have these two back in their organization for one final run, a feud between Matt and Edge could be one of the plans. But it depends on a variety of things, as a lot of things have to be in place for this dream feud to again become a reality in the biggest pro wrestling promotion in the entire world.
