- Despite Klopp's claims of the club not spending much on transfers, Liverpool has spent over $1 Billion during his time.
Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool will be walking on different paths for the first time in nine years. The German manager took the tough decision to leave his post as the Liverpool head coach in January of this year. The Merseyside club did not enjoy the best of campaigns during Klopp‘s last season, finishing third in the Premier League table with the Carabao Cup their only piece of silverware.
Jurgen Klopp:
“We are a rock solid club and don’t overspend. People say ‘you didn’t spend enough’. What the heck do you want? I just understand this from the Liverpool way.”

Throughout Klopp’s time at Liverpool, the manager has been vocal about the lack of spending done by his club in relation to Liverpool’s competitors in the Premier League. “People say: you didn’t spend enough. This is Liverpool way. We don’t overspend. The other clubs, with most money and best managers, they win it. We didn’t have the best manager and never had the best team but for a while we played the best football… I love that!”, even during his last interview as Liverpool boss, Klopp did not hold back his opinions.
However, Jurgen Klopp’s statements over the years have not always displayed the true picture. Competing with state-owned clubs in England, Liverpool has not always backed down from spending hefty amounts in the transfer window. The German coach has had the liberty of coaching some of the finest talents on the planet arriving from various leagues all over Europe.
Liverpool’s spending history under Jurgen Klopp
Ever since Jurgen Klopp took over the managerial duties at Liverpool, the club has been constantly competing with Manchester City for several accolades. Fenway Sports Group owns the majority stakes at Liverpool and has allowed Klopp to field competitive teams on a consistent basis. Liverpool during Klopp’s last season at the club was ranked as the seventh most valuable club in the world in terms of aggregated players’ transfer values.

Since Klopp’s appointment at Liverpool in the middle of the 2015/16 season, the club has spent over $1 billion on player arrivals, with net spend of around $370 million. Under him, the club has also broken the world record transfer fee for a defender (Virgil van Dijk) as well as a goalkeeper (Alisson Becker). Over the years, Liverpool has also witnessed some atrocious bids being rejected. Consequently, the German’s comments have left the rest of the league baffled.
A look at Jurgen Klopp’s time at Liverpool
Despite all the criticisms and arguments against Jurgen Klopp, his time and efforts at Liverpool cannot be overlooked. Liverpool was far away from the elite status they are renowned for when Jurgen Klopp was handed the task of reviving the club. The coach immediately asked for some patience and time from the fans with a promise to deliver trophies. Not many would have expected the rise Liverpool would go on to enjoy in the coming years.

Before Klopp’s arrival, Liverpool had not won the league since the 1989-90 season and the Champions League since 2005. Within two seasons from 2018 to 2020, Jurgen Klopp ensured both accolades found their way back to Anfield. The style that Klopp’s side displayed, with high-pressing, counter-attacking soccer made Liverpool one of the most enjoyable teams to watch.
Jurgen Klopp will leave the club with 299 wins in 491 games. His win percentage of 60.9% puts him above any other manager in Liverpool’s rich history. The Merseyside club won eight major honors under their beloved manager. The club will surely have a hard time finding someone to replicate Jurgen Klopp’s achievements and impact on Liverpool.
