The #9 ranked middleweight contender, Sean Strickland recalls his motorcycle accident which nearly cost him his fighting career. Sean Strickland subsequently got into a motorbike accident in December 2018. Strickland had been unconscious for some hours due to the seriousness of the event.
Strickland also had to have surgery as a result of the event. When the brilliant MMA fighter woke up after a few hours, the doctors advised him that he may not be able to carry on with his MMA career.
The UFC fighter had no recollection of how he arrived, but he was lying in a hospital bed when the officer informed him that he had been in a major motorbike accident. The doctors also informed Strickland that he was to be hospitalized for major surgery on his leg. “I left some of my kneecap on the road,” Strickland jokingly stated prior to his return in UFC Vegas 12. As reported by Strickland, he was driving home from a sparring practice at the gym when a vehicle drove out in front of him at 45 miles per hour. Although the crash was not his fault, Strickland bore the entirety of the injury, falling unconscious for several hours thereafter.
A multiple number of injuries including, patella tendon tear, kneecap displacement, quadriceps tear, and other injuries made it look like a life-threatening trauma for Strickland. Despite having to walk on one leg, Strickland decided not to give up and made the most of a terrible situation.

That may appear to be a fantastic turn of events, but boxing on one leg was a long way from fighting again. Despite his efforts to convince himself that he’d one day return to the UFC octagon, Strickland claims self-doubt would frequently sneak into his head.
In a recent interview with The MacLife, Sean was asked about him ever going to take a main event prior to or after his motorcycle accident. “You know I’m not a huge fan of planning. I just kind of do this shit as I go just ask the IRS…”
“..I don’t know man after my motorcycle accident was hard you know like because really like I was f***g poor like California just f***g took their taxes as I owed them, I couldn’t pay them, I had a choice I could pay my taxes, or go f***g broke.” Strickland was willing to take any job at that point as it was really a hard time for the UFC fighter.
Strickland had some of the best moments of his career after his nearly career-threatening injury. He defeated Israel Adesanya in the UFC 293 main event and won the middleweight championship. His dominance in the bout surprised everyone, including Adesanya. While the bout went all five rounds, Sean won the bout via a unanimous decision. Although he lost the title to Dricus du Plessis at UFC 297, Sean’s grit and determination to continue fighting will be an inspiration for many.
