Kobe Bryant is a name that has been etched in the history of the NBA forever. He was one of the greatest players that the world has seen and continues to be praised and appreciated. However, at the end of the day, he was also a human with his own set of struggles that he dealt with. This might come as a surprise that Bryant who is widely renowned for his ‘Mamba Mentality’ struggled with horrendous sleeping habits during his storied career.
Notably, the former Lakers player was always willing to share insights and talk about things and experiences that he learned from. He did a special segment on a course that goes by the name of ‘Arianna Huffington’s Thrive 01: Discovering Meditation and Sleep.’ In this, Bryant spoke about sleep and meditation for only 5 minutes and 35 seconds and provided knowledge of a lifetime.
During this, he admitted and spoke about his struggles with sleeping. Bryant started by saying, “My sleep habits were Horrendous, to say the least.” He continued to speak about how he always had a hard time sleeping and stated, “I couldn’t figure out how to shut my brain off.” Being hardworking and driven by a fierce determination to be better than everyone else and his previous version surely came with a downside for Bryant.
Kobe Bryant revealed the exact moment he started valuing sleep
In the same segment, Kobe Bryant revealed how his horrendous sleeping habits started affecting the way he played on the court and how he came to the realization of the value of sleep. “I went out there and play the game and I play like crap,” Bryant emphasized. He continued to talk about how he wondered why he was playing like crap despite practicing the same moves over and over again.

“But yet, I couldn’t execute them properly,” the former basketball player admitted before revealing how he was feeling sluggish, lethargic, etc. Bryant emphasized he knew that this wasn’t because of a lack of training as he trained obsessively. “Maybe the fact that I sleep in 2 or 3 hours a night. Maybe it had something to do with the fact that you are playing like crap,” he said after revealing that he wasn’t young 21 years old anymore.
Kobe Bryant used to meditate every day in the morning
Before talking about his horrendous sleeping habits and how he realized the importance of sleep, Kobe Bryant gave an assignment to the students of the course. He asked them to start by getting an extra 30 minutes of sleep and eventually making a proper sleeping routine. After this, the second assignment was to practice meditation for five minutes a day preferably in the morning.
Furthermore, the Lakers star revealed, “I meditate every day and I do in the mornings and I do it for about 10-15 minutes.” In addition to this, he spoke about how it is an important practice for him as it sets him up for the rest of the day. Bryant gave an example as he said, “It’s like having an anchor. If I don’t do it, I feel like I’m constantly chasing the day as opposed to being able to control and dictate the day.” This is surely a convincing example right here.
