SUMMARY
- The FIA plans to make significant changes to the current point system.
- Fans approve of the proposed change awarding points to the top 12 finishers.
The points system in Formula 1 racing is one of a kind in itself assessed by the FIA (Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile). There has been a refurbishment of the points system from as late as 1991 to 2010. But after major changes in the points system in 2010, there was only one new addition seen in 2019, which was that a point was added for fastest lap for any driver who finished in the top 10 of the race.
There have been questions regarding the points system and, for instance, the penalty system as well, but what has Formula 1 done to cope with its fans and franchise expectations?
The FIA has come up with its newest proposed points system, and it has undergone a few changes from 2010 to now. This points system focuses mainly on looking at the weaker teams compared to the mighty giants of racing like Mercedes, Ferrari, or Red Bull, for instance.
The Formula 1 world talks about Max Verstappen or a Lewis Hamilton, but what about the drivers who put in their blood and sweat and finish the race, like Kevin Magnussen of Haas or Logan Sargeant of Williams Racing?
What does FIA aim to change with the new point system?
The FIA’s newest system aims to add more points to the smaller teams whose drivers are fairly doing well but unable to grab points for their franchises. This looks like a huge change in the world of racing, as the focus is being set on almost every driver and increasing the competition in Formula 1. There has been a draft regarding the new points system, which will be discussed in the upcoming F1 Commission meeting in Geneva.
🚨 F1 will reportedly discuss a new points system
The idea that has been proposed is for points to be distributed to the top 12 drivers, to hopefully create more relevance to midfield battles.
The system could be implemented as early as 2025.

Basically, the new points system declares that, instead of 10 usual participants, 12 drivers will be able to get points after the race. The points are changed only from the 8th position, hence keeping the first 7 positions the same. From the 8th place driver, it will be the following: 5 points, 4, 3, 2, and 1 point, respectively. This will be reviewed at the F1 Commission meeting in Geneva, and a final call will take place regarding this.
Formula 1 fans have their say on new point system
For any given new advancement in the fast-growing sports world, there will always be a positive and negative side to reviews. This thrives for the smallest things like a point system being changed to something as huge as a team or a driver being changed in Formula 1. The voice of people always matters first, no matter what the FIA comes up with, and fans all over the world will be ready to express their points of view.
The fans had mixed views, and many went viral on Twitter. Many believe that there should not be points for the drivers that finish after 10th place, whereas there are trolls that are stated by fans saying, “Every driver needs to be awarded points except for the 20th place.” It has just been a matter of a few hours since the draft was released, and the fans have already started to go nuts.

I still think the top 15 makes more sense, but progress is progress

This is just the initial draft and is yet to be approved at the upcoming conference in Geneva. Till then, the world of Formula 1 can sit back after a roller coaster of the Chinese Grand Prix that has just concluded. Everyone is in anticipation of whether this draft will be approved or what the other changes will be.
