SUMMARY
- Lewis Hamilton's move to Ferrari from Mercedes stirs F1, surprising fans after 11-year Mercedes partnership.
- Transition to Ferrari presents Hamilton with cultural adaptation challenges, notably the deep-rooted Tifosi fervor for Prancing Horse.
Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton caused a major reshuffle within Formula 1 with the announcement of him driving under the Ferrari banner from 2025 onwards. After sharing 11-year-long camaraderie with Silver Arrows, his shift caught many off guard. The British driver will be driving alongside Charles Leclerc who is aiming to contend for the championship title in the latest 2024 season.
However, Hamilton faces the challenge of adapting to the team’s rich cultural heritage. Tifosi, as everyone lovingly calls it, is part of the Italian culture as they share a deep-rooted love for Ferrari and motorsports. This comes as a stark contrast to his previous English-based teams like McLaren and Mercedes.
Lewis Hamilton explores Italian culture ahead of Ferrari move
Transitioning to an Italian team means Hamilton will need to acclimate himself to Italy’s unique culture, including its language. While uncertain about mastering the beautiful speech, Hamilton expressed willingness to make the effort. During pre-season testing, a media personnel questioned the driver about his language-learning efforts.

Although, the 39-year-old admitted that he has not learned the language yet but stated, “In all these years, I’ve not managed to learn any other languages. But, of course, I’ll definitely try. I do remember when I was karting in Italy, and I was able to pick up a few lines. So, hopefully, that’ll come back to me pretty quickly.”
Hamilton’s move to Ferrari marks the convergence of two iconic entities in F1 history, with Ferrari boasting a rich legacy and passionate fan base, Tifosi. Not only must the Briton strive to restore Prancing Horse’s glory on the track, but he must also earn the adoration of the passionate fan community, making cultural assimilation a priority for the seasoned driver.
Hamilton’s karting adventure in Italy with arch-rival Nico Rosberg
Before partnering as teammates at Mercedes, Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg had known each other for a long time. However, their relationship soured during intense battles for the world championship title. While talking about their earlier encounter, Hamilton talked about his trips to Italy as a teen. He said, “I actually went to Monaco when I was 13, I was invited at the time by Nico, we were karting together in Italy.”

Their journey began in karting in the Mediterranean tracks in Italy back in 1997, where Rosberg, already a rising star with CRG, crossed paths with Hamilton racing for Top Kart.
He further added, “He was racing for another team at the time but we ended up being friends.” Despite their sour relationship, Hamilton and Rosberg bonded during their initial karting trips to Italy, home base for major F1 teams including Ferrari. Following the German’s 2016 drivers’ title win and swift retirement, public interactions with the 39-year-old driver dwindled, showing signs of strain.
