After Insomniac’s data was recently leaked by a ransomware attack, it seems like all of the confidential information of the company has now become a public property being laid out for everyone on the internet to see. The leak comes a week after the ransomware group’s unsuccessful attempt to sell the data for the asking price of $2 million or 50 bitcoins
The leaked data has revealed a lot of information from in-development games, and future projects to employees’ personal information. The leaked data revealed the company’s future plans and analysis. was released by malicious operators who attempted to secure millions of dollars for the data.
Apart from Insomniac’s data, the documents also revealed details about Sony and their internal information, such as their stance on Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision and more. The leaked data also includes the financial data of the company. The development costs, sales, and shares for every game from Insomniac over the years were revealed in detail.
How much profit did Sunset Overdrive make?
While the financial documents were leaked, a group of eagle-eyed users noticed that Sunset Overdrive, a 2014 game developed by Insomniac Games, had collected a profit of just $567 in profit since it was released. Sunset Overdrive was a quirky, and adventurous Xbox and PC exclusive game. It was surprising to see low profits for the game since it had received positive reviews.
Although the game did not create a lot of impact in the market financially, it was appreciated by players. The game featured some great visuals, entertaining combat, compelling traversal mechanics, and an intriguing tale.
Nonetheless, Insomniac’s financial document reveals it was a burden on the developer. As reported the game cost $42,682,135 to developers and generated a revenue of $49,737,133 for selling 1,898,433 copies of the game. Although it is not a huge difference, the fact that it was co-developed and the profits were divided between Insomniac and Blind Squirrel Games, Insomniac received just $567 over its entire lifecycle.
Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart ran into losses?
As the word about Sunset Overdrive making marginal profits spread, users quickly began comparing it to other games. A user on X (formerly Twitter) pointed out that at least it had made a profit as against Sony’s 2021 sequel ‘Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart.’
The Bethesda news page ‘BethesdaNet’ wrote, “Wait till you find out that Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart made a loss of 8 million 💀 while Sunset Overdrive (brand new IP on Xbox One) made $8,000,567 more than a long lasting PlayStation IP… it’s really puzzling to me how that happened.” (sic)

The user pointed out that Sunset Overdrive was a completely new title, what they refer to as IP, which was released on Xbox One and PC exclusively back in 2014. This was before Sony bought Insomniac Games. On the other hand, Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart was released exclusively on PlayStation 5 and PC in 2021 (post Sony acquired Insomniac). It was the ninth main installment in Sony’s acclaimed Ratchet & Clank series
The user emphasized the fact that a brand new title released in 2014 on a Microsoft platform had still made $8,000,567 more profit than a sequel released on a Sony platform in 2021. They tried to imply that maybe Insomniac’s titles did better on Xbox back in the day than they do on PlayStation today.
