The fate of live service games in recent times is no news. The recent past has that live service games often struggle and have been poorly received by the player’s community. Joining the suit is Warner Bros.’ latest title Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.
Released on February 2, 2024, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League was developed by Rocksteady Studios and published by Warner Bros. Interestingly, the game is based on the DC Comics team Suicide Squad. The game is believed to be a spin-off of the Batman: Arkham series, and a follow-up to the 2015 game Batman: Arkham Knight.

SteamDB, a third-party website that tracks Steam data reveals that Marvel’s Avengers recorded an all-time peak of 31,165 concurrent players on September 5, 2020. Interestingly, the Marvel game touched its peak after just 24 hours of launch.
On the contrary DC’s Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League had a peak of only 13,459 players within a similar duration, that is 24 hours after launch. Furthermore, the fact that even the beta version of Marvel’s Avengers hit an all-time peak of 18,908 players on Steam rubs salt in DC fans’ wounds.

Notably, these figures are for Steam only and do not take into account the players on other platforms such as Xbox and PlayStation. Besides, the games were pretty similar, both titles featured the live service elements and currencies as well as others.
Marvel’s Avengers unfortunately shut down three years after it was launched. The publisher Square Enix also reported a loss worth $48 million in the quarter when the game was launched.
Fans initially speculated that Suicide Squad was originally planned to be a live-service game similar to Marvel’s Avengers. However, after fans expressed their disappointment with to live service, the developers reportedly adjusted the game to be more similar to Destiny 2.

Initial reviews for Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League were not all that great. It has a Metascore of just 59 and a user score of 3.9 which translates to “generally unfavorable” on Metacritic. Although it has a 9/10 on Steam, other credible reviews like IGN and IMDb rate the game a 5/10 and 4.4/10 respectively.

The game also faced a rough launch. Players who purchased the $100 Deluxe Edition were promised early access. However, just when the early access began, it was taken down within an hour due to technical problems such as players getting completed save files due to a bug.
Rocksteady pulled the game down immediately and compensated the affected players with $20 of in-game currency. To add to the fiasco, plot leaks, the incentive attitude towards Kevin Conroy’s final scene as Batman in video games, as well as sexual harassment whistleblowers made things worse for the game.
