PlayStation’s latest handheld remote device has finally arrived. The remote called ‘PlayStation Portal’ brings the entire experience of PlayStation 5 onto a small handheld device. Portal features a vibrant 8-inch LCD screen having a 1080p resolution at 60fps for an HD visual experience. The exclusive remote includes the DualSense wireless controller, adaptive triggers, and haptic feedback.
Ever since the Portal was announced in August 2023, fans have been excited about this device. The only problem the community found with the remote was that did not support Bluetooth connectivity for headphones. However, later, Sony addressed this issue by introducing the PlayStation Link wireless technology, which will be compatible with Sony’s upcoming Pulse Explore earbuds and Pulse Elite headset.
Although it appears to be similar to other handheld consoles like the Nintendo Switch, however, notably, it is not a gaming console in and of itself, or rather a “remote player.”
How does PlayStation Portal work?
To start using Sony’s latest PlayStation Portal remote device, players need to first set up the device. Firstly, players need to turn on their PS5 console or put it into rest mode. Players must note that the Portal is a remote exclusive for the PlayStation 5, thus players need a PlayStation 5 console to use it.
Next, players need to ensure the following settings are configured on their PS5 console:
- The PS5 console should be connected to the internet.
- Players must sign in with the same account which they will use to sign in on the PS Portal.
- The PS5 console should be updated to the latest version of the system software.
- From the home screen of PS5 console, players must select Settings > System > Remote Play and then turn on Enable Remote Play.
Once this is done, the PS portal will be set up and ready to use with the PlayStation 5 console. To start using the console, players must tap the portal or alternatively press the cross button on the home screen of their PS Portal. The PS Portal will connect with the PS5 console automatically, and Remote Play starts.
As far as operating the PS Portal is concerned, the remote has similar buttons to DualSense wireless controllers. Additionally, DualSense functions are also mapped to the PS Portal touchscreen. Thus, players who are familiar with the DualSense controllers will find using the Portal relatively easier. Also, players must remember that to use the PlayStation Portal, players need to keep their PlayStation 5 consoles on.
Sony had opened the preorders for PlayStation Portal in September 2023 before finally hitting the shelves on November 15, 2023. It is priced at $199.99.
The new remote from Sony has been enjoying great reviews so far. It will be interesting to see how PlayStation Portal fairs, and if Sony launches a similar product for other consoles as well.
