SUMMARY
- Nier's last mainline title was Nier Automata, that released 7 years ago, not counting the Replicant remake.
- Yoko Taro may have teased the next Nier game in a concert.
When Nier: Automata was first released in Japan in 2017, it was an immediate hit, selling over 198,500 copies in its first week of sales. The game managed to sell over seven million copies globally as of November 2022.
Since the release of Nier Replicant in 2021, fans of the series have made it abundantly evident that they want to see a new mainline entry in the series. But since Yoko Taro was working on a lot of other smaller projects after Replicant came out, the Nier game never materialized.
Fans of the action role-playing game NieR: Automata from Square Enix and Platinum Games appear to have a bright future ahead of them, as series creator Yoko Taro recently may have hinted at a potential sequel to the game.
The Nier Automata sequel teased
The source of this news originates from the current worldwide tour of the Nier: Orchestra Concert. It’s claimed that Taro revealed a new Niner game during one of its most recent concerts in London.
ResetEra user SanTheSly visited the concert and has thrown light on the news of the sequel. SanTheSly claims that at the conclusion of the event, “Yoko Taro took the stage at the end, told the audience that the Square Enix president was in the crowd and that if we wanted an Automata sequel to give the loudest applause of the night,”.
They then went on to added that “The room burst into applause, shouts, and claps right away”, as the crowd was very happy to hear the news.

Additionally, according to SanTheSly, the term “REPENT” appeared constantly on the screen and finally changed to the word “R3PENT.” Therefore, they think this seems to be a pretty clear indication that Nier 3: Repent may be the title of the upcoming game.
Others have also claimed to have witnessed the same “R3PENT” words in a similar fashion at the concert in Germany. It now appears that the same phrase is being utilized throughout all the concerts because it was also spotted by people attending the concert in Spain.
Given that there hasn’t been a proper sequel to the game since Nier: Automata in 2017, this wouldn’t come as a huge surprise to fans if all these hints turn out to be true, and people finally get to see the sequel.
The way ahead for the Nier franchise
Fans of the series have been wondering for a long time when to anticipate Yoko Taro’s next sequel since Nier Replicant was released in 2021.
It would have seemed obvious to the fans that Taro would have started work on the next sequel after Automata’s enormous popularity, but this was not the case. This is because both he and Saito apparently had serious doubt that the sequel would achieve the same level of commercial success as the first game.
This, however, doesn’t mean that a sequel won’t come. According to IGN, Yosuke Saito, a producer for Square Enix, addressed questions regarding the Nier series during the G-STAR 2023 event in Korea. There he stated that as long as Taro, the series’ creator, is alive, fans can expect that there would be a new installment coming to the series.
