If recent rumors are to be believed, EA is reportedly planning something big that could potentially revolutionize the gaming sector. Electronic Arts has reportedly patented a technology that can allow gamers to voice their in-game characters. The latest patent highlights EA’s efforts to continue innovations in the gaming industry.
Running on the back of technology, the gaming industry is forever evolving. New and upcoming innovative technologies help the gaming space boost further. EA has always been at the forefront of bringing in new innovations and keeping the competitive spirits high.
Over the past years, the giant has patented many such technologies. In April 2023, the company filed a patent allowing games to change their background music, helping reflect players’ emotions. Additionally, it also patented a system that allows developers to develop more realistic models and animations. Thus, offering new ways for players to control their in-game characters.
EA will allow players to voice their own characters?
According to a report from VeryAli Gaming, EA has patented a new technology that will enable players to make use of their own voices their in-game characters communicate using their voices. In the patent, EA has patented the synthesizer module technology. It is a voice converter and a vocoder that can replicate players’ voices and allow their in-game characters to speak what players want using their own voices.
Thus, the technology effectively converts players into their game character’s voice actor, resulting in various results.
The process starts when a player inputs what they want they want their character to say into a synthesizer module. The report states that the input data could be text, wherein they type in what they want their in-game character to say.
The module will then generate source acoustic features that serve the voice or style of the players. Later, the synthesizer module sends the acoustic features to a voice converter, which will then meld it with the player’s target speaker to reproduce the player’s voice for the in-game character.
Fans react to EA’s new patent
Although it sounds like an interesting new feature, the patent has failed to impress some gamers. Players are apparently cringing at the thought of hearing their own voice for their in-game characters. There is a Reddit r/GamingLeaksAndRumors subreddit that has several players expressing their opinions.
EA Patents To Let Players Voice In-Game Characters Themselves

Players are saying that they’re not looking forward to hearing their own voice for their in-game character and that they prefer using the voice of a celebrity they like. However, using a celebrity voice may give rise to copyright concerns. Similar to what happened when fans recreated voice actor Paul Eiding through AI without his permission.
That being said, players are reminded that as of now, the technology is only a patent and it remains to be seen if it is actually implemented.
