Fans recently received an update from Bungie regarding their upcoming project, Destiny 2: The Final Shape. The Final Shape is a big deal since it marks the end of the 10-year saga that’ the fans have enjoyed since the first Destiny.
The developers published a blog to officially inform fans that The Final Shape had been postponed. “The Final Shape is the culmination of the first ten years of Destiny storytelling and, for Guardians everywhere, countless hours spent together. We want to honor that journey, so we’re taking the time we need to deliver an even bigger and bolder vision, one that we hope will be remembered and treasured for years to come,” the blog read.
Besides, Destiny 2’s Game Director Joe Blackburn also got on to YouTube stream to share more clarity on what’s coming ahead in Destiny 2.
Destiny 2: The Final Shape officially postponed
The blog from the Destiny 2 dev team officially informed fans that The Final Shape had been postponed to June 2024. Notably, this marks an extension of over three months, given that it was supposed to launch in February 2024.
“Hey everyone. We’ll keep it short and simple. The Final Shape needs more time to become exactly what we want it to be, so we’re moving its release date to June 4, 2024,” the official blog read.
It further said, “Season of the Wish begins tomorrow and will extend until the launch of The Final Shape in June. While the majority of content and narrative for Season of the Wish will run from late November to February as originally planned, the team is adding new content available for all players to jump into until the launch of The Final Shape.”
Talking about what fans can expect from The Final Shape expansion, Joe said, “We’ve been holding some cards close to our chest on this one. And I’m going to ask that you bear with us for a little bit longer because we think a bunch of the systems and the gameplay that we want to talk about are things that you need to see, not just hear.”
The devs stated that, as planned, Season of Wish will end in February. For the next three months till the launch of The Final Shape, they plan to deliver new content to fans.
Destiny 2: The Final Shape delayed due to layoffs?
Notably, this news comes weeks after Bungie laid off an undisclosed number of its employees. The layoffs came as a big blow since the company let go of some of the veteran and instrumental employees, including Destiny 2’s Music Composer Michael Salvatori, who had been with the company for over two decades.
Reports suggest as much as 8% of the workforce, equivalent to almost 100 people, were laid off. The reason for layoffs was cited as poor player retention and a drop in Destiny 2 revenues to below 45% of Bungie‘s projections. Almost every department of the company was affected.
As reported earlier, the delay of Destiny 2: The Final Shape amidst the layoffs seems to be more than just a coincidence. The shrunken size of the hands working on the project may be one of the biggest reasons for the delay in the expansion’s launch.
