- Apex Legends Season 20 Breakout is bringing a massive overhaul to the game.
- Apex Legends will get a new EVO Armor system.
Apex Legends Season 20: Breakout is almost just around the corner. And ahead of the launch of the season developer Respawn Entertainment has made the biggest changes to how Legends play in the history of the game.
The game celebrated its fifth year anniversary on February 5, 2024. As part of the celebration, the developers revealed the patch notes for the upcoming season via a blog titled, “NEW UPDATES COMING WITH APEX LEGENDS: BREAKOUT. Notably in spite of being a new season, Season 20 will not include any new Legend, map, or weapons. Instead, it brings major overhauls and reworks to the core systems of the Apex Legends gameplay.
Season 20, releasing on February 13, 2024, completely transforms how Evo Shields functions, introduces a brand-new Legend Upgrade System making every match unique, as well as simplified changes in how players interact with Crafting Replicators.
Legend Upgrade System
As per Respawn Entertainment, the Legend Upgrade System is easily the biggest change being introduced. It has changed the way the game is played since Apex Legends launched five years ago. The new system gives all 25 Legends four unique perks. Some agnostic perks have been given to all Legends, so that they may unlock during a game of duos, trios, or ranked.

The blog post describes the system as the “Legend Upgrade system—an in-match progression system that deepens the Apex Legends Battle Royale experience by allowing you to tailor your Legend to your playstyle. This new feature will restart with each match, giving you the opportunity to try different upgrades on for size.”
More than 100 different perks in total will be added to the game with the new Legend Upgrade System. Every time a player upgrades their Evo Shield to blue and purple, they will be prompted with a choice of choosing one of two upgrades at the top of their screen. These upgrades may be specific to the Legend about their tactical ability, their ultimate ability, or it may be about other mechanics such as gunplay.
Evo Armor changes
Shields have greatly evolved in Apex Legends since its launch five years ago. Season 6 added Evo Armor to the game allowing players to upgrade their shields by dealing damage. With the upcoming Apex Legends Season 20 Breakout, Evo Armor is all set to receive another massive overhaul.
With Apex Legends Season 20, armor will not be a part of the ground loot table anymore. Players will hold their own Evo shield. This shield must be upgraded through the match. However, with the latest season, Evo Armor can be upgraded in multiple ways instead of just doing damage to other players.
“Players will earn EVO points from many core actions, like dealing damage, that help you succeed in the Battle Royale—with some actions also rewarding EVO to the whole squad,” the blog reads.
Here are the sources of earning EVO:
Personal Gains
- Damage
- Knocks and Knock Assists – Knocks against a legend of a higher level will net an underdog XP bonus
- Finishers
- EVO Cache (Care Packages, Vaults, etc.)
Team Gains
- Squad Wipes
- Revives
- Respawns
- Class Interactions (Survey Beacons, Ring Consoles, etc.)
- World Interactions (Wildlife, Trials Completions, etc.)
- EVO Harvesters
The Evo Harvesters can be found scattered around the map. In some cases, they can also be found by players in things such as care packages.

The blog states, “EVO Harvesters will randomly spawn on every BR map with a delayed activation during the first ring, allowing players time to loot up before seeking them out. Any squad member can interact with them to award a large amount of EVO to the whole squad. Every team can interact with each EVO Harvester individually, as with Crafting Harvesters in previous seasons.”
Similarly, the season introduces EVO Caches, which are a new rare loot item containing raw EVO. It will award a full level when collected. It can be found spawning in the world’s more highly contested locations like vaults and supply drops. In case a player is already at max level, they cannot pick up the EVO Cache.
