Draymond Green recently discussed the current situation that Luka Doncic, Kyrie Irving, and the Dallas Mavericks are facing and what they need to do in order to overcome their challenge. Most fans will know that the Mavs have matched up against the Boston Celtics for the 2024 NBA Finals. Although Luka has been playing quite well and proving himself as the best player on the court, the Mavs are down 0-2 to the Celtics.
Since the Golden State Warriors’ season came to an end even before the playoffs officially began, Draymond has had a lot of time on his hands to work on his podcast among other activities. During the latest episode, Green discussed the predicament that the Mavs are facing and what they need to do in order to turn this series around. That said, fans might be interested in hearing what the Warriors star has to say.
Draymond Green thinks that Luka Doncic should play in the post and get teammates more involved
Although Draymond Green has proven to have quite a high basketball IQ, fans should not take his words in blindly without maintaining their individual sense of perspective. On his podcast, Draymond discussed the Dallas Mavericks and the reason for their first 2 losses to the Boston Celtics.
“I think Luka played really well. Kai is getting to his spots. He’s just missing. Like as we know, this is a make-or-miss league…I think their offense has actually hurt their defense. I think they can be more egregious and playing on Boston being the directional team that they are…But at the same time, their offense has been a problem.”
The Golden State Warriors star certainly has a unique take on the issue. Although he didn’t go into great detail regarding what changes the Mavs should make to their offense, Draymond opined that Luka Doncic should utilize his post skills to help his team. Some might wonder if there is much merit to this suggestion.
Why Green’s advice might not help Luka and the Dallas Mavericks
While there is no way of knowing for certain if the Mavs would have done better in the first 2 games of the NBA Finals with Luka Doncic playing in the post, the Celtics have elite defenders such as Jrue Holiday and Derrick White to prevent Luka from getting into a groove. Moreover, Kristaps Porzingis is proving himself to be an elite rim protector and defender.
Draymond claimed that the Mavs would be able to get other players involved if Luka had more possessions in the post. However, the entire team appears to be struggling under the bright lights of the NBA Finals. Luka Doncic is the only star on the squad who has kept them afloat against the Celtics. Reducing his possessions to get teammates open looks that they are likely to miss might not be the answer against the Celtics.
In any case, the adjustments and changes to their playstyle that the Dallas Mavericks will make will be decided by Jason Kidd. Fans are left wondering if the team has any hope of defending their homecourt against the Celtics to make a comeback in this series.
