Conor McGregor and Dana White hit a rough road early this year when the “Notorious” rained down on the UFC President for not landing a fight. McGregor called out Justin Gaethje after his emphatic win over Tony Ferguson, however, the match-up couldn’t see the light of the day.
Soon after, McGregor announced his retirement from the sport. Needless to say, the retirement was once again short-lived as the “Notorious” is set to make a comeback against former interim champion Dustin Poirier in January next year.
Ahead of the match-up, Dana White revealed what led to McGregor announcing his retirement from the sport.
“I think frustrations. He was frustrated with a lot of things that were beyond our control.”
White stated that with the pandemic situation, and UFC is no control of offering what Conor wanted, the “Notorious” felt frustrated and did what he did.
What’s next for Conor McGregor?
It looks like Conor McGregor is set to scale the heights of the lightweight division once again as he takes on former interim champion Dustin Poirier. The fight is being seen as a potential match-up for #1 contender’s match for the lightweight championship. Needless to say, the winner of this fight deserves a title shot.
However, the situation of Khabib Nurmagomedov still hangs in balance as the Dagestani fighter is yet to officially vacate his title belt. Be that as it may, a potential Justin Gaethje vs Conor McGregor could be on the cards should Nurmagomedov make his retirement official. Meanwhile, there are several up and coming fighters who deserve a title shot at one of the most competitive divisions in the UFC.
Former two-time Bellator lightweight champion Michael Chandler is also in the mix. On the other side, Charles Oliveira with a win over Tony Fegruson is also on the top of the ranks in the lightweight division. It will be interesting to see what lies ahead for the UFC’s 155-pound division. Needless to say, should McGregor triumph over Poirier, the “Notorious” will be one win away from ruling the division once again. In such a scenario, a potential rematch with Khabib Nurmagomedov will likely take place at one point in the future.
