SUMMARY
- Starfield managed to blow some fans away and some not. It was Bethesda's first attempt at a Space based game and they received mixed reactions.
- As with all Bethesda titles, Starfield was a modder's paradise and people have gotten creative with the mods.
Bethesda’s Starfield has undoubtedly been a great game allowing players to explore space and multiple planets. However, right from the start, when it launched in September 2023, players have thought that mods make this game much better.
Needless to say, the game has an active community of modders and a wide range of mods to enhance the overall experience. While some essential mods are highly recommended if one is playing Starfield, there are others that players can try for other modifications in the game.
Mech Suit mod for Starfield
While there are already a bunch of immersive Starfield mods, that can help players make their Starfield experience more immersive and engaging, the modders haven’t stopped there. Modders have now taken matters into their own hands to introduce new things and updates. Although Bethesda remains silent about any new updates, modders are adding features in plenty.
The latest fan-based feature introduced is pilotable mechs. Ever since the game arrived. there have been a handful of mechs from around the planets and outposts, however, there hasn’t been a way to pilot them. Recently, a dedicated modder named Jared Kohr took matters seriously and shared the first look at a computer program to address the issue.
The mod developed by Jared allows players to traverse the terrain without stepping out in a giant mech suit. Additionally, it also fires weapons for exploration. This video shared on YouTube by Jared isn’t finished. In the comment section, he mentions that it’s definitely not in a playable state.
He further says, “We lack documentation and I’ve found out that multiple functions are either not working at all or as intended/expected. Unfortunately, we can’t go to Bethesda when we have questions so we’re typically in it alone, this is why I am seeking help from other, possibly more knowledgeable mod authors for support. At this time, there are still at least one other form of implementation I haven’t tried yet, will see where it goes.”
Starfield fans are hopeful that pilotable mechs may be officially added to the game through an update or DLC. Nonetheless, there has been no confirmation has been given by Bethesda yet.
What do the devs say about Mechs in Starfield?
In the game, in one of the scenes, an orphan named ‘Vanna’ appears. Vanna’s parents were both mech pilots and died during the Colony Wars. This has left fans wondering if the game allows players to pilot mechs during their playthrough.
Ahead of the game’s release, the game’s lead designer Emil Pagliarulo in a Discord Starfield Q&A had stated that Starfield’s mechs are more of an ornamental feature. When asked about the history of Starfield’s mechs, Pagliarulo clarified that the mechs are “leftovers from the Colony Wars.” The Colony Wars is a conflict that kicked off in 2308 when Starfield’s Freestar Collective violated a treaty.
The developer added that “Both sides, United Colonies and Freestar Collective, had mechs. But the Freestar Collective really mastered them.” The United Colonies is believed to have balanced out its use of mechs with “the controlled alien beasts from their Xenowarfare division.”
Eventually, UC’s Xenowarfare labs and both sides’ mechs were reportedly “outlawed with the Armistice that ended the Colony War” a few decades ahead of Starfield’s beginning. Thus Pagliarulo suggests all that is left of the mechs are the rusting hulks littering the historic battlefields. He says mechs are not usable and they’re in ruins.
