SUMMARY
- Warner Bros. Minecraft movie is in the works with a star studded cast and is aiming for a April 4, 2025 release.
- Some of the cast for the movie has been revealed including Jack Black as Steve and Aaron Paul as an Enderman.
The planned live-action Swedish-American movie Minecraft: The Movie is based on the popular video game Minecraft. Warner Bros. Pictures is currently planning to release it on April 4, 2025. Jared Hess is directing it from a screenplay written by Chris Bowman and Hubbel Palmer.
Video game adaptions used to have a negative reputation, but with recent hits like Arcane, The Last of Us, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Detective Pikachu, and Sonic the Hedgehog, it’s clear that they can succeed with the appropriate creative team. Since Warner Brothers and Mojang first announced their aspirations for a Minecraft movie in 2014, they have subsequently switched teams several times.
Up until this point, the movie has undergone many changes and several directors have been associated with the project before leaving. It appears that the much-reworked and much-delayed movie about Minecraft is finally coming together with a director, an A-list star, and a release date set.
Jack Black will reportedly be a part of Minecraft Live Action movie
According to a recent Deadline report, Jack Black appears to be returning to a legendary video game role. The 54-year-old actor and musician for Tenacious D is reportedly set to play the main character Steve, according to rumors in Deadline. Black is rumored to be joining the cast of the Minecraft movie, where he would portray Steve, the blocky protagonist of the series.
Black recently starred as Bowser in The Super Mario Bros Movie, so he is no stranger to video game adaptations. The animated smash of the previous year became the second-highest-earning animated movie of all time, surpassing Frozen (2013).

It will be an intriguing turnabout for Black, who commanded attention as Bowser in the Super Mario Bros. Movie if the claim is true. In the role of Steve, he would transform from antagonist to protagonist. For video game roles in Hollywood, actor-musician Jack Black is still a popular choice.
The possible casting announcement is an additional development for the Minecraft film, which has been in the works since at least 2014.
Minecraft Live Action Movie confirmed cast
The news of Jason Momoa starring in the Minecraft film was released in April 2022. In addition to portraying Aquaman in the DCEU, Momoa has been busy lately filming Fast X. However, not much is known about the role Momoa will be playing at this time.
It was revealed in May 2023 that Matt Berry, star of What We Do in the Shadows, would be joining Momoa in the cast in an unidentified capacity. The cast was expanded in November 2023 to include Danielle Brooks from The Colour Purple and Sebastian Eugene Hansen from Just Mercy.

Hansen will play Henry, and Brooks will play Dawn. It was revealed in December 2023 that Emma Myers (Wednesday) has also been added to the cast. As reported by Deadline, Aaron Paul will also be a part of the movie and will play the role of an Enderman.
Though it’s no longer true, some people may have heard that Steve Carell might star in the Minecraft movie. Although Carrell’s participation was extensively publicized in 2016, the project has undergone substantial revisions since then, and the Despicable Me and The Office star is no longer thought to be involved.
