SUMMARY
- Amazon Prime is making a show based on Bethesda's Fallout Series.
- Naturally, players were curious whether the series would follow any of the games' storylines.
A new live-action TV series based on the popular video game franchise Fallout, which is renowned for its gripping post-apocalyptic stories, is about to make its debut on television. From the first Fallout game by Interplay in 1997 to the most recent release, Fallout 76, the series has enthralled viewers with its unique weapons, ghouls, super mutants, power armor, and diverse cast of people.
Fallout is expected to release on Amazon Prime Video on April 12, 2024. Bethesda officially revealed the release date via the official X account for the franchise. It’s unclear, though, if the eight-episode season will drop all at once or if the episodes will be released on a weekly basis which is a regular strategy for Prime Video.
During the 2023 edition of CCXP, the first teaser trailer for the series was released by Prime Video. It gave fans an early look at what to expect. The teaser, set to Nat King Cole’s “I Don’t Want To See Tomorrow,” promises a live-action version that stays true to the tone of the game while enlarging the Fallout world. On October 28, 2022, a behind-the-scenes featurette named “Beyond The Game” was also made available.
Will the Fallout show follow a game’s story?
At this time, the most significant question among fans is the Fallout series’ ultimate narrative. Another question is whether or not it will draw from any of the games.
The Fallout TV series features a brand-new plot that is set in a distant era. The game’s creator, Todd Howard, stated this in an interview with Vanity Fair. He added that this was one of his contingency plans in case the series was turned into a TV series or motion picture. Fortunately, Nolan and Joy transformed the existing content in a way that astounded Howard with their original idea for the Fallout TV series.
He was not interested in just telling the same plot as in the video games. “When people wanted to make a movie they wanted to tell the story of Fallout 3 or tell the story of Fallout 4, and it was meh,” Howard said. “For this it was, ‘hey let’s do something that exists within the world of Fallout.’
“It’s not retelling a game story. It’s basically an area of the map. Let’s tell a story here that fits in the world that we have built, doesn’t break any of the rules, can reference things in the games, but isn’t a retelling of the games,” he further added.
The Great War, a nuclear conflict between the United States and China that occurred in the year 2077, is the primary event that shaped the Fallout franchise. By this time the world has advanced technologically to the point where robots, biotech, hover cars, and a fascination with the 1940s are commonplace.
The 185-year timeline of the Fallout video games begins in 2102 with the first game and ends in 2287. The Fallout TV series on Amazon Prime further expands the timeline by taking place in 2296. These events take place after the events of all the Fallout video games.
There is curiosity about the events that will occur in the series. Furthermore, the curiosity extends to the Fallout characters that might show up in the series. This is because the Fallout franchise hasn’t touched this era yet. This enables Fallout to create something completely fresh while incorporating a lot of intriguing elements from the games.
